Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

There’s a lady that has a 12 year old boy that is a fan of Jonathan Kent. Today she called my LCS to cancel her son’s subscription to the Superman book because of the news that the character is bi-sexual. Instead of being a teachable moment for the pre-teen, it becomes another moment of homophobia here in NC

On the other hand, the opposite might happen where the parents forbidding something could cause the kid to be even MORE interested in the subject, than if the parents did nothing.

For some kids if you tell them they can't have/do something, they will want it even more than before.

Or another crazy possibility is that the woman wants to teach her son about the differences in the world when she feels her son is ready and not leave it up to Warner Media to teach her child.

If a 12-year-old boy hasn't already seen 100s of hours of pornography, I will be shocked.

It's a touchy subject indeed but the kid is 12 and most certainly has heard about gay people before. The situation here is that the mom is ultra conservative and they feel like shielding their son from reality is the best for him. These are they type of kids that may grow up to be homophobic due to not understanding that gay people are the same as everyone else, humans.

I'd say that the simple fact that she called up the comic book store to complain makes her a "Karen."

"I'd leak to speak to the manager about this disgusting gay Superman comic book!"

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

I mentioned this here before, but I still feel that DC dropped the ball big time by allowing Bendis to age Jonathan Kent from 10 to 17. If there was a book that was garnering the attention of kids and preteens, it was SuperSons. This felt like the perfect legacy book to introduce to the next generation of kids that want to start reading comics. Instead, Bendis aged the character, readership of the Superman books went down, and DC pushed a great artist in Patrick Gleason to sign a Marvel exclusive agreement. Now, Jon Kent is put in a position where it will be hard to retcon him back to 10 years old and fans never got to see those growing pain stories that could have been very intriguing.

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

I can already see Fox News and right wingers throwing a fit at the revised Superman motto announced right now at the DC Fandome by Jim Lee. The new motto will be: Truth, Justice and a Better Tomorrow. This will take out "The American Way" part of motto.

I actually like this motto. The US has shown their ass over the past 5 years to say the least, and "the American Way" is certainly not representative of what Superman represents

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

The colorist for Superman: Son of Kal El, Gabe Eltaeb, has been fired by DC Comics after spilling the secrets of the Jon Kent coming out in issue #5 of the series to his Comicsgate buddies. That's why they broke the news before it was known by the media. Eltaeb has also been making negative statements about DC, so he basically asked to be fired.

DC Comics needs to take a stand and fire the remaining CG assholes that still work for them. People like Shane Davis, Aaron Lopresti, Kenneth Rocafort, among others, are still given projects by DC Comics when they are well know CGs.

I saw a Foxnews headline in my newsfeed that had a slightly different spin:
Superman colorist quits over comic's embrace of wokness: 'Tired of this s***'
Article here for those that feel like sullying themselves. (Full disclosure: I didn't read the "article", just skimmed).

On a related note, I stopped by my (semi) local Comic Book Shop today and picked up #4 of Superman: Son of Kal-El. I asked the guy there how the reaction to the coming out was, and he said it's been really positive with people coming in to buy all the back-issues. Such wokeness!

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

I hate how political this forum has become but I decided to weigh in on how well the coming out issue is selling. It really has no grounds in how woke or not people are. It is people speculating. Just like the death of superman or the breaking of the bat. Unless Taylor is going to produce some great writing, within months the title will revert to the same crappy numbers superman titles have done for years now. Probably gain a few woke fans and lose a few who object to this type of storyline.

Comic books have always been political, so talking about it comes with the territory. Secondly, sexual preferences aren't political as much as politicians want to weigh on it. Third, this isn't a stunt that is going to be reversed at some point. Jon Kent is bisexual and that's going to be one of the things that identifies him moving forward. Tom Taylor books have been selling incredibly well for over a couple of years now. From Injustice to DCeased to Nightwing to Superman Son of Kal El, his books have been selling in the top 20 due to his great writing and understanding of the characters. His Superman #1 already had a second print because of how the first print sold out. Saying that this book is going to flatten in couple of months simply isn't realistic as Taylor's books have been gaining more fans as the series goes on. And Superman has done pretty good numbers since 2016 up until early in Bendis run. Bendis books actually dipped in sales which is one of the reasons he bailed on them. Still, this Jon Kent book, not only has been good, it will continue to sell and comics will keep incorporating politics and diversity as they have been doing forever.

I've always felt that if Giant Size X-Men #1 would been released today, the same racist/homophobic people that are throwing fits today will be criticizing that book since it replaces 5 Caucasian characters with one of the most diverse groups ever that includes a Canadian, an African, a Native American, a Japanese, a Russian and a German.

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

I don't think so re: Giant Size X-men coming out today. I think that kind of reaction would've been way more common back then. I do think there would have been more outrage over the only American Indian member getting offed right away and the only Asian member being a jerk and ditching, though.

I think it's true that a lot of the sales are on speculation, but I'm sure there are some dropping the book and some picking it up because of it... however in the long run it does show that if there is some kind of boycott going on, it's not working, at least not at the moment. And of course the series has to have quality above and beyond a coming out to sustain success, I don't think anyone said that it would continuously sell out just because of this premise.

Taylor was already producing great writing since issue 1, as well on Nightwing.

Now you have social media, Fox News, Ben Shapiro and every damn conservative weigh in on the subject at an international level. Just go back to 10 years ago and see the reaction that Miles Morales got from the right wing crew. Lou Dobbs threw a fit on national TV about it. Back then in the 70's, you would have the comic book crowd talk about it. Now, you have people that have never picked up a comic book or that just want to get clicks and views on their youtube videos talking shit about these changes because that's how they make money. I'm 100% sure that if Storm debuted today and replaced Jean Grey, Candace Owens would be on Fox News 24/7 talking about this replacement shows the failure of affirmative action or some bullshit along those lines.

Re: DC Comics - 2021 Thread

See the difference to me is that they weren't replacing the legacy characters, ie: there wasn't a new Jean Grey, Angel, Beast, etc., it was a changing of the guard, and we've had a ton of that in Avengers and other places. I don't think people get worked up over that. They (for whatever reason) get worked out when their beloved characters are "replaced" by others whether it's a retcon or even a name. Even the Jonathan thing is mainly because he took up his father's moniker.

I may be underestimating the propensity for outrage though.
