The 5th Annual DVDTalk TBD Comic Book Challenge - April 2019

Can’t Believe I Still Haven’t Read Challenge

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not ;)

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - MYOC or Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Want a personal checklist to help you pick stuff to read?

Obviously you'll want to edit the below spoilered example checklist to fit your needs.

I’ve said this in past Challenges, probably each August, but darn it I’m finally going to finish Bone.

I think I’ve read the first 6 issues several times, and the first 15 or so once, but I need to get it done.

So did we settle on one idea for April?

I’m starting with John Byrne’s Alpha Flight. I’ve encountered the characters before, and of course have read a lot of X-Men of the era, but have never gotten around to this even though I own the omnibus and the digital trades. Starting with digital for the convenience.

Tons of other possibilities, but finishing anything for this challenge would be a big win.

4/1
Alpha Flight Classic vol. 1*

4/5
Alpha Flight Classic vol. 2*

4/7
Alpha Flight Classic vol. 3*

4/12
Miracleman vol. 1*

4/13
Miracleman vol. 2*

Read Bone issue 1 yesterday, and plan to just read an issue or three a day to savor the experience all month.

Not sure what else I’ll add to it, but your Alpha Flight reasons pretty much apply to me too!

I've been going through the John Constantine Hellblazer TPBs over the past few months. Just finished Volume 16 (Mike Carey run). Enjoying it much more than the Azzarello run (which felt like Constantine fanfic).

Very slow going this month. Slow progress on Bone, and finally re-reading Ronin is about all I’ve done.

I finished the three Alpha Flight trades and enjoyed them. The Byrne art was great, of course, and the Canadian angle put a different spin on things, as well as the fact that they were kind of a non-team that only featured a couple characters in many of the issues. The big surprise had already been spoiled for me on this forum ;), but fortunately it was long enough ago that I had forgotten the specifics so it was still a surprise. Now I want to go back and read their X-Men appearances. The trades did include a bit from Secret Wars, which looks like a big mess from that excerpt.

Next I’ve been reading Miracleman. Good story, but tons of filler in the trades. I liked reading a few of the original British stories but just skipped most of them after that.

I've been reading some of Dixon's Birds of Prey trades. I imagine we'll get pretty much every Birds of Prey collected with the upcoming movie.

That would be nice. A few years ago I read some of the Dixon and Simone trades and wanted more, but they were pretty limited.
