Batman 50 - Attack of the variant covers
Well, a few weeks to go until the release of Batman 50 (the wedding of Bats and Catwoman), but already a bunch of variant covers have been revealed and are up for preorder.
https://comicbookinvest.com/2018/06/...0-the-wedding/ If you count all the sketch and virgin variants, there could be well over a hundred different covers available for this issue. Some are striking, some are duds. I pity the poor fool who wants to collect all of them. I plan on picking up a couple. Love this Warren Louw cover, but it's sold out from the retailer and already sells for jacked up prices on Ebay, particularly if you want all four versions of it. https://s33.postimg.cc/fd6oycchr/ipcze5m1i1211.jpg The Josh Middleton cover reminds me a bit of his Batgirl 23 cover, which was the surprise sensation of the year so far. https://s33.postimg.cc/gti7gnn67/batmidd.jpg His catwoman variant is simple but sweet. https://s33.postimg.cc/7kg16jea7/Df_..._Wk_AA32bg.jpg I also like this one from Mark Brooks. A little cluttered, but nice. https://s33.postimg.cc/66oeb14of/batscats.jpg This one from Jae Lee is also pretty cool. https://i1.wp.com/comicbookinvest.co...7106.jpg?ssl=1 |

I think I like the one by Jae Lee best. Might grab this issue.

Jim Lee is my favorite, since it reminds me of Hush, where all this started. Gonna try to get the sketch variant.

Re: Batman 50 - Attack of the variant covers
I don't have an issue with variants. What's pissing me off is how overpriced they are lately and how they have flooded the market with them, making most of these books pretty much drop in price after the purchase. In addition, it seems that both companies (but more Marvel than DC) have been having quality control issues with these books and they have arrived to the retailers damaged, to the point they have to be reprinted and wait another month to get them. This is even driving the price for them down. The industry is already on a downturn in terms of sales, and this gimmicky events with their own retailer-exclusive covers may lead to a crash similar as to what we saw in the 90's or even worse, similar to the trading cards crash, which they still have not recovered.

Re: Batman 50 - Attack of the variant covers
I ordered the Louw basic cover on Saturday. Only exclusive I've ordered. I already had the normal variants on order.
As a Catwoman collector (semi-completionist...until now), I dread this issue. I do like the Kirkham, Basaldua, McTeigue, Middleton, Jae Lee, & Jimenez covers. |
Re: Batman 50 - Attack of the variant covers
I really like the McTeigue cover and I'm not even familiar with her(?) work. I thought it was a Campbell that did that cover.

I wonder if the prices on these will drop after the big backlash? Wouldn't mind picking up a few at cheaper prices, especially the Louw ones.
Funny how Frank Cho was criticized early on for not having a wedding theme for his covers, but turns out he was just being honest. |
