Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
Nice links!
I really wish DC would do a John Byrne's Superman omnibus covering everything he wrote and/or drew for Superman. I know they have a Man Of Steel 9 volume series where they did that in trades but would love to see an oversized hardcover edition(s) release of that. |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
Yep-Nice Links.
I am surprised that they still put out Marvel Masterworks. |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
Absolute Swamp Thing!

Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
I'm looking forward to the Earth X omnibus from Marvel. I consider that trilogy the last great thing done by Marvel before they went down the wrong path.
DC appears to be doing their best attempt at bankrupting me. I'm glad it looks like we'll get George Perez's entire Wonder Woman run collected. |

I have to imagine once they get through the 80's and reach the point where comics were beginning to be produced digitally, the line will be retired.
I can understand doing a full Madterworks run of Claremont's X-Men, but most of the other titles of that 70s/80s period were pretty meh. I'm sort of surprised they haven't Masterworked some of the 70s stuff that has a cult following like Ghost Rider, Tomb of Dracula, and Master of Kung Fu, and are still running things like Avengers and Fantastic Four. |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
I don't think quality has really prevented them from releasing anything before. Spider-Woman, Ms. Marvel and The Champions have been Masterwork'd for goodness sakes. Besides, Miller Daredevil is right around the corner and the next FF volume will begin Byrne's long run. That's another 5 FF volumes right there. Both of those runs really need the restoration as well. After that it's only a couple more years before they get to Simonson Thor and Stern Avengers. Both are well loved (and long) runs. Who knows, maybe the whole thing will fall apart before they finish those, but I can't imagine they will stop making them as long as people continue to buy them.
As for the 70's, Master of Kung Fu was a tricky situation due to rights, but the omnibuses that came out got full Masterwork quality restoration, so unless people are desperate to have them in that specific format, there's really no point. Ghost Rider and Tomb of Dracula are easily the program's two major 70's blindspots. Ghost Rider was tied up in litigation for awhile, which may have prevented it from moving forward. With Tomb of Dracula I seem to recall there being some internal editorial reasoning for it not being part of the Masterworks yet, but I don't remember the specifics. The fact that it's not a superhero title probably doesn't help its case though. |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
I expect Marvel eventually restores every single issue of their major books, whether it was a good run or not. It appears that is how DC is doing things.

Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
^ I dunno. I bought Byrne's run right out of the spinner racks at the time and I was always struck by how plugged up the linework looked. I'm not sure, but it always looked to me like he was using a marker to ink over his pencils (something Alex Toth used regularly later in life too).
Between writing and pencilling and inking, he would have had to find some way to cut corners if he could. Using markers would definitely speed up the process. |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
If Byrne had been using markers, all the FF original art out there would probably be brown and faded by now and that is definitely not the case.
Take a look at IDW's Byrne FF artist edition and compare those pages to the line reproduction in either the original comics or the omnibus/trades. Big difference. |

. In my biz, for a while there was a big run on Marquette Markers. They had a nice conical tip, but were supple enough so that with very little pressure you could get widely variable line thickness along with a nice rat tail without a lot of effort. However they used something (acetone?) as the carrier that was regulated as hazardous here so we all had to import them from Canada (which imported them manufactured from Mexico). Even though those were "premium" markers and something a budding artist in the US couldn't buy off the shelf, they aged horribly. When they made changes to the tip, a lot of people then switched to Crayolas which are water based. It's gob smacking how much better a ten year old piece of art holds up when it's done with a 30¢ Crayola, versus a $2.50 Marquette. I'm not familiar with what was available back in the early 80's- especially to working professionals. I've got the Byrne Modern Masters volume that TwoMorrows put out. If I can find where it is, I'm sure the answer will be in there. Intertesting to hear you found the work in the Artist Edition to be superior to the Omnibus. That's one AE I've wanted, but have taken for granted the art would look as muddy as I've seen in some of the reprint collections (and from what I remember of the actual books). That's a big reason I've never been able to pull the trigger on it. Here's one example of why I think he was using markers. Look at the 4 logo on the chest. It's done with one broad stroke in each direction, and the tonal variance where the lines intersect and overlap looks like tell tale marker to me. But then again, he could have just been using a marker for fill in conjunction with a more common nib/holder https://www.hakes.com/Image/MediumRe...20/7/image.jpg |
Re: Marvel/DC 2018 Omnibus Plan's?
Yeah, it does look like a marker.
Especially in the fine detail on Reed's hair, and in a lot of places you can see a "spot" on the strokes where the pen was put down on the board. I suppose someone could go over to Byrnerobotics and ask him. He usually answers technical questions like this. |

It would make a great companion to the Moore/Bissette/Totleben Absolute Editions and Wrightson's art deserves the Absolute Treatment. |
