Does anyone own comic-related statuettes?
 

You know what I'm talking about--statuettes, maquettes, whatever. As much as I'd like to have a bunch of hot Red Sonja and Catwoman figurines, I have little room and patience to store a bunch of dust-collecting shelf porn.

However, I do have a bunch of Tintin statues and love them.

I have too many to count. Mostly Superman and Captain Marvel, but I did get the entire Superfriends Maquette set.

My favorite is the awesome Supergirl meeting Superman origin statue taken from Action Comics #252.

It's a fantastic piece in person, pictures really don't do it justice. The only Superman pieces I won't consider are new ones depicting him without the red underwear. DC better keep putting out classic Superman statues.

I'm mainly a figure collector (ok, a doll collector if you consider Hot Toys), I think because I've always liked toys, but also because statues can be super pricey. But I understand the appeal because it's not like I'm constantly posing the figures anyway.

The only ones I have aren't comic related necessarily, but are ones from Jeffrey Brown's "Vader and son" and "Vader and daughter" books. Oh and I also have some anime ones (One Piece and Dragonball ones).

I love that Supergirl one, Phantom Stranger.

Like fujishig, I mainly have "action figures" aka dolls. But I do have the Sandman Arabian Nights statue. I love it.

(Full size version, not the minis. I got them about twenty years ago from a comc book store that was having a going out of business sale. Brand new in the box for half off. My first statue purchase.)

I have a few other Sandman and Death statues, too, including the Arabian Knights one above and the Destiny one. Also have the Swamp Thing and John Constantine statues, too.

Can't be arsed to google pictures for all of them.

I don't think I have any statuettes or similar figures. Maybe a couple old Megos or similar action figures, but I've never been a display person. All my space is taken up my actual content. I can't afford the shelf space for art. Same with posters pretty much. I have a few, mainly freebies with kickstarters or from the 80s when I had wall space. But now, if I see wall space I fill it with a shelf or bookcase or stack of boxes.

This statue has been in my comic shop for around 20 years and I've always wanted to buy it but never have. I'd like to collect comic book statues(that Action 252 one is amazing), but having space to display them and how expensive they are holds me back.

Hallmark put out a couple different statues like that back in the 1990s. I had one like it until a visiting relative accidentally broke off Batman's arm.

My favorite solo Superman statue is the Alex Ross Superman Forever statue. The sculpt and detail is incredible in the original larger size version. The pair of glasses in his hand break off all the time, auctions come up all the time with the glasses missing.

I have a ton of Statues and Mini-Busts (too many to name).

I started back in the early 90's with DC's Death & Robin by Bowen (I'd pre-ordered Batman & Sandman too, but all the statues were allocated back in the day, and my lcs always took care of a couple of people, even if it mean they got every statue they ordered and others got none, or close to it.

One of the best I own is the Sandman 20th Anniversary Bookends (1st version not the reprint), which were designed for, and are sturdy enough for the Absolute Sandman volumes.

DC produced a lot of nice ones, but they liked to keep doing the same few characters over and over and over and rarely branched out. Some of those were great, but it really helped when they increased the character selection, like how they made Mini-Bust lines of Women of the DCU for Adam Hughes, Terry Dodson and Amanda Connor. A dozen or more for each artist, and while a few characters were repeated, there were lots of new characters who had never been depicted before. Like Big Barda, Jade, Mary Marvel, Mera, Phantom Lady, Vixen, Dove, Raven, etc.

That's one of the great appeals of Bowen's lines, where you could really build up a selection of 20+ Avengers or X-Men. Collect (almost) every Iron Man armor, or mini-busts of most of Alpha Flight. And tons more, like a dozen plus Spider-Man villains.

Unfortunately Bowen kept getting better as I had less and less disposable income, so I missed a bunch of stuff. But he's on a hiatus (due to the terms of a divorce that he got screwed over on) and so hasn't made a new Statue in a couple years. This has given me the opportunity to pick up some that I missed out on in the aftermarket, like this year I've gotten Full-Size statues of Havok, Ice-Man (clear), Marvel Girl, Valkyrie, Beast (on the Avengers base) and Captain America (on an Avengers base). Cap. especially was much needed as I have so many other Avengers already.

There are 2 versions, one in white and one in silver, in case you spot a good sale on it. Those can occasionally happen.

I have a small collection (by the standards of people that hang out on the statue forums) of Bowens and Sideshow pieces that I began collecting in 2010 or thereabouts. Was going to be putting in a pre-order for the new Red Sonja (I have both of the previous ones too) and ARH still owes me a Frazetta.
Otherwise I'm getting cramped for space and have had to cut down on these. The boxes are getting just too damn big. That's one reason I started shifting my attention to Hot Toys. HT's are also generally much better with celebrity likenesses.

What I liked about the Bowen stuff was that he was clearly a fan of the same eras I was. His product was almost exclusively based on silver and Bronze Age representations of the characters- unlike SS which produces quite a bit of their stuff with a more modern vibe.

I don't have a lot of room to display stuff so it generally stays packed up in storage while I rotate an odd piece in and out.

A good non artist specific representation of Silver/Bronze Age Superman. The mixed media (fabric elements) really came out well on this one.


Sideshow's Conan: The Prize. They got his eye color wrong, but the piece as a whole gives off a great sense of kinetic energy in person.


I don't think it clicked with a lot of other people, but I still enjoy this slightly irreverent take on Scarlet Witch (and the Vision). It's a breath of fresh air when every other figure is designed to look as fierce and bad ass as possible. Though I could easily do without the typical SS silicone stripper boobs.


I was able to watch the development and problem solving that went into this, which was a real treat, as Randy was posting updates regularly on one of the statue forums. I still have some quibbles with the some of the illogical aspects of it, but as a general impression of what it's trying to represent, it works well enough. Beyond that, it's just plain fun to look at.


This was the less popular of two variants Bowen produced. The other has a more conventional looking bellowing Hulk head on the same body. I chose this one as it channels Sal Buscema who was the main Hulk artist I grew up with.


Generally I'm not a fan of revising classic costumes to try to make them real world relatable. In this case, however, it worked insanely well. I liked it enough in pics to order it, but it ended up truly blowing me away in person.


An exception to the rule as far as statues being able to present a good likeness of an actual person. The portrait was taken directly from digital scans made for the film of SJ. The incomparable Will Harbottle sculpted the rest. Also, it's one of the very rare instances where the final production piece was 100% consistent with it's solicited prototype.


And here's the first statue I ever bought. I remember I got a bit of a deal on it, but the $100 msrp still made me wince. At the time, it was a very extravagant purchase for something that had no utilitarian function beyond eye candy.

Ha, I had that too and I don't even remember why. I must have bought the blu ray or dvd or something. It went in the trash when we moved, I think.

No, but I've always had my eye on those Sandman bookends. My comic related collectibles more fall into the catagory of vintage Mego superhero action figures.

There aren't many classic Superboy statues. The only one that comes to mind is a neat one with Superboy petting Krypto.

The Legion has gotten very few statues over the years. DC is heavily focused on making Superman and Batman statues. Most other characters that aren't core Justice League members have few, if any, statues made of them.

Captain Marvel statues must sell much better than his comics, because he's a very popular statue.

Tweeterhead has got a DC license now, and I believe I heard they have plans to do some B and C list characters. They look to be positioning themselves as the Bowen for the DCU.

They put out a Supergirl in her 70's Bronze Age bolero shirt and shorts that I was seriously tempted by, but ultimately had to pass on because I couldn't dig the face sculpt.
