Comedy Challenge

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not ;)

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

After starting Chilling Adventures of Sabrina last month, I should read some normal Archie this month, or some of the digital Disney ducks that recently hit the services.

Planning on diving into Howard the Duck... I guess this will be a Howard the Duck challenge for me...

Howard the Duck: The Complete Collection 1 Trade
Adventures Into Fear 19 - first appearance of Howard the Duck, I wish I would have maybe dived into Manthing Collection first because this seems like the tail end of Adventures into Fear. Steve Gerber's writing is good and the plot metaphysical enough I would have liked to jump on sooner.
Man-Thing 1 - continuation from Adventures into Fear, still a little jarring jumping in without all the backstory and Howard is more of a sight gag than instrumental to story; nice high fantasy stuff.
Giant Sized Man-Thing 4+5 [Backup stories] - the parade of zany cartoonish villans starts here with a frog humanoid and a vampire cow.
Howard the Duck 1 - quasi-satirical story about a cosmic accountant with some economic puns.
Howard the Duck 2 - Howard vs a turnip guy, one of the cornier stories.
Howard the Duck 3 - Kung Fu social commentary on media violence with some gutsy plot and shoehorned plot devices to make Howard kung fu worthy.
Howard the Duck 4 - settles into a 'villain of the week' style format without a lot of continuity. It's cute at times but ultimately starting to feel 'meh.'
Howard the Duck 5-9 - a brief quasi road trip, Howard runs for president, Howard fights an elderly canadian in beaver exosuit or a gingerbreak Frankenstein - Howard it starting to steep in what feels like fan service very early on (especially the runs for president stuff which seems hollow) and the situations sometimes seem too far out and slapstick without any real connection. They're cartoonish but the run is not really keeping my attention.
Marvel Treasury Edition 12 - Howard the Duck meets the Defenders, better stuff than has been in the core title so far.
Howard the Duck 10-13 - when things started getting boring these issues were nicely psychadelic and helped me get back into the series, they're just surreal without much plot but enough stylish touches to help draw me back in. Odd special appearance by KISS, mental asylum, exorcists, Son of Satan, bam...
Howard the Duck Annual 1 - Arabian nights style hijinks with more social commentary.
Howard the Duck 14-15 - Howard is getting back into an action/adventure grove with random sea monsters and stuff
Howard the Duck 16 - I can decide if this is clever or lame but a filler issue with the author writing random thoughts and admitting her didn't make a script deadline.

A Man-Thing October followed by a Howard the Duck November sounds like a blast. Next year!
