Netflix buys comic book publisher Millarworld in company’s first acquisition

Financials were not disclosed, but Millar has officially hit the big time.

Netflix announced today that it’s acquiring Millarworld, Mark Millar’s comic book publishing house, in the company’s first ever acquisition. According to Netflix’s press release, the purchase is part of the company’s efforts to “acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories featuring compelling characters,” for upcoming Netflix Originals, which are increasingly becoming a critical part of the streaming service’s offerings.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos commented in the announcement that the company will be looking to adapt both existing Millarworld franchises, along with new stories developed by Mark Millar and the Millarworld creative team going forward.

Millarworld is probably best known for its three franchises that have already made the jump from page to screen: Wanted, Kick-Ass, and Kingsman. Under the new Netflix ownership, Millarworld will continue to exist, and write and publish new stories.

Terms of the deal, including how much Netflix paid for Millarworld, weren’t announced, but with the massive popularity of comic book adaptations right now, it’s easy to see why Netflix would want to get its own stable of licenses to turn into original programming.

Millar's comics have all been movie pitches for past fifteen or so years, so this isn't surprising.

I've been thinking the same thing, -they all read like "spec" scripts. Funny enough, I prefer his "Millarworld" material to what he churned out prior. I find it interesting that Director Matthew Vaughn actually took "Kick-Ass" and "Kingsman" in a far more Satiric/Cartoony direction than they were written.

Millar is saying this likely means Nemesis gets made.

Wonder how this all works for Millar's co-creators (Quitely, McNiven, etc) since they own 50% of the concepts they worked on?

I know Millar has fans, but they're wrong.

Ugh, as if anything was needed to swell Millar's ego more.

Curious that was planned to go just before today's announcement that Disney/Marvel is pulling out of Netflix.

The studios want their own streaming services and realize that Netflix is a growing threat as a content creator.

Both Marvel and DC plan to have their own streaming services by 2019.

Ugh. License (don't buy out) some stuff from Image, Netflix. Actually I'm kinda surprised that hasn't happened more with the success of the Walking Dead.

This article states that current Marvel series' will stay with Netflix and it's just Disney that's leaving NF.

https://www.cnet.com/news/disney-to-...aming-service/

"Moana" and other Disney films currently streaming on Netflix won't be there after 2018, according to the Walt Disney Company.

Disney announced Tuesday that it will launch its own subscription service in 2019 that will become the new home to films from Walt Disney Studios, Pixar and others under its umbrella. Those 2019 films will include "Toy Story 4," the sequel to "Frozen" and the live-action remake of "The Lion King."
Disney CEO Bob Iger told CNBC that while Disney has a "good relationship" with Netflix, his company is going to exercise an option in its agreement to leave the service. The films will stay on Netflix until the end of 2018. Marvel TV shows, such as "Daredevil" and "The Defenders," will stay on the service permanently, according to CNBC.

Disney also hasn't decided whether to include films from Lucasfilm, which makes "Star Wars," and Marvel in its new subscription service, The New York Times reported.
