As an adult it's been Superman. I've always loved the iconic color scheme and design, which is still the best superhero costume for my money. Truthfully, other characters took precedence for me as a youngster like Spider-Man and the Flash. My first heavy comic book exposure to Superman came from Byrne's run, which ironically I enjoy the least of any Superman era. I am a big fan of the classic Silver and Bronze age elements in the character's mythos, including the Legion, Supergirl and everything.

This was my introduction to Superman, a Christmas present at age 6 (1977):

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/...20090707131241

This hardcover book had mostly black and white (but a few color) reprints of Superman stories from five decades. I must have read this thing a bazillion times as a child. I still have it (along with the Batman edition) and wouldn't give it away for anything.

It also has my favorite Superman story of all time:

Great twist ending on that one.

I like Spider-man before they screwed it all up with clones, android parents returning from the dead, and "brand new day".

Having lived through decades of continuity and change, I can't really pick a character as much as one iteration of that character.

My all-time favorite superhero is the Beast during his Avengers tenure. The polysyllabic strongman that came before was okay, as was the avuncular professor that came after. But the bouncing, blue-eyed Beast rocked my world as a ten-year-old and still holds a special place in my heart today.

If we include non-super comics characters, it's Maggie Chascarillo hands-down.

I checked those books out of the library a million times. A few years ago, I finally bought my own copies. I preferred Batman but both were great.

I still have both copies, too. I remember getting them on clearance at Walden Books for $6 each back in the late 70's.

As for my favorite character; it's Batman. But only the early bronze age version from 69-75. I liked most artists' that worked on the Bat titles except for Ernie Chau. I look through my issues and I still can't stand the guy's artwork. Frank Robbins was a bad artist for Batman, also but his writing was good.

When I was a kid, my $5 would get me an assortment of weird comic books, but I always picked out issues of Daredevil.

I remember reading an interview where Byrne said he fucked up not adding the SA/BA backstories to Superman's origin. I think he further messed it up with the Timetrapper story he did where he added another earth. I was like WTF? Didn't they just get rid of all the earths? So, here he is adding another one and all he really did is screw over every Superboy and LSH story I grew up with. :(

I think DC realized they were destroying Legion's history by removing Superboy from continuity, so they came up with the Time Trapper's lame alternate pocket universe to preserve Superboy in the Legion.

They quickly realized it was a terrible solution to the problem, which is what has led to the Legion getting rebooted seemingly every five years. Removing Superman's past as Superboy largely destroyed Legion as a key component of the DC Universe.

I would have handled it much differently. Superman still becomes Superboy at some point, but only when he visits the 30th Century as a teenager for a brief period. If you don't want Superman knowing he one day becomes the world's greatest hero, some incident in the 30th Century forces his mind to get wiped of his Superboy adventures and he returns to the 20th Century unaffected as Clark Kent. The Legion then promise to leave him alone.

They already did all that when Superboy first became a member. Saturn Girl put a suggestion in his head where he would not remember anything in regards to his future when he went back to his time. Only thing he would remember is that he is a member of the LSH.

The first comic I ever got was Amazing Spider-Man so to this day Spidey's always had a special place for me. If I had to pick a second it would probably be The Tick.

Yeah, I discovered the character while looking through ads in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide. He was chilling with Bat-mite, and he looked weird and cool.
It was only as an adult that I finally got a chance to read the comics.

Googling bulletin boards...
This is what it looked like?

I haven't read any of the new stuff, but I had a subscription to G.I. Joe when I was in preschool and Kindergarten and I learned to read with that comic book. Whether he was a toy first or not, my favorite comic book character is Snake Eyes.

Re: Your Favorite Comic Book Character?

It's always been Batman for me. I know that's probably a really common answer but I've liked him for a long time. Grew up with the 66 series, the Burton and Schumacher films, and Batman: The Animated Series and became a big fan. As I got older he still holds up and has great stories both in comics and on tv/film. Also I'm a big fan of the Bat Family too.

I like a lot of other superheroes but I don't have as much attachment to others. Spider-Man comes somewhat close but I didn't have nearly the same exposure to the character until later on.

I haven't read the IDW ROM revival, but I think Marvel's version is one of the best pure superhero comics around.

Re: Your Favorite Comic Book Character?

I've been thinking about this on and off since the topic was originally posted in July and I've had trouble coming up with an answer. X-Men was my first love and like just about every other 12 year old in 1992 I would have said Wolverine was my favorite, but that didn't last long. I kind of love Jean Grey as written by Claremont, but once she was resurrected and more or less became the team mom, she kind of sucked. In fact the more I think about it, the more I realize I just like certain versions of characters and there's not really one that stands above the rest.

Kevin Matchstick and Nexus. I think we started reading comics at the same time. I bought complete runs of Badger and Grendel, too.

Death from Sandman is the most likeable. But I have to choose Batman. Writers have been making Batman stories for eighty years, and they can still find interesting things to do with the character.

brayzie 09-16-17 02:57 PM

Re: Your Favorite Comic Book Character?

For favorite superheroes it's Batman and Spider-man.

Batman has probably the most well-written stories of DC and Marvel's characters.
When the '89 movie came out my parents bought me Tales of the Dark Knight: Batman's First Fifty Years. All his adventures looked awesome, even the crazy sci-fi ones that supposedly are so bad.

And for Spider-man, I can read just about any issue from any era and enjoy it. Peter Parker is easy to relate to, great rogues gallery, great supporting cast, and I liked how it felt like this great saga unfolding. With DC they reboot every so often. With Spider-man though, events had lasting effects. Peter went to college, dropped out, got married, his friend Harry got married too and started a family. Then Harry went crazy and died. Felicia moved on and got with Flash Thompson. Aunt Mary passed away, but revealed to Peter that she knew all along that he was Spider-man.
