Use of Derogatory/Racist words in comics

I was wondering if any other comic books besides Green Lantern/Green Arrow #85 used racist words before everything became politically correct. I was just curious since this is the only book I have that is like that which isn't for mature readers. It even has the Comic Code Approval stamp on the cover. It's obvious the book was from a time when people had different thoughts on what is appropriate for children.

Kitty Pryde has been free with the N-word a few times

And in WWII, Superman wasn't super PC

Does Pieface from early Green Lantern count?

Not sure about the exact issue, but that's John Romita Jr art, so it's probably from around 180-210. Wouldn't surprise me if it's a later issue, around 200-210.

Am I missing something here? Is the term "junkie" racist or is there some other scene inside of the comic itself?

It's from one of the Secret Wars II tie-ins. Either X-Men #196, 202 or 203.

Since when did the forum stop censoring the "j" word?

Inside the comic.

I believe it was 196. She also used it in God Loves, Man Kills.

She's basically the Mark Fuhrman of the X-Men.

And also during a speech in an issue of New Mutants (maybe one of the 40s, 45 or 46?) when she ran down a list of racial slurs.

Maybe not "racist" but definitely not PC.

And I just read a Bendis issue of XMen where Kitty's proclaiming she was super hurt by a friend saying something antisemetic when she was young...

That was #45. The teen suicide issue. Probably one of the most memorable issues from that run.

Even with the serious tone of the story I don't think they could get away with it today in comics not made for mature readers.

This was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread (because I have this issue). This was recalled because of the offending word. Was supposed to be "killer", which I assume is in the properly re-released copies. Sadly, so many "bad" copies got out that didn't get recalled that the value of the recalled issue is crap. (crap! :grunt:)

Well, the basis for this issue is the critically acclaimed Black Like Me book, so I don't believe this issue was politically incorrect.

Basis doesn't always mean well executed, but I don't know if I ever actually read that issue.

Well, it wasn't well received by those that can't escape what the writer wrote about....

I thought that book was controversial because of the reference to the film I Am Curious (Yellow), which was banned as pornographic in places.

Wow, Kitty Pryde seemed to almost be autistic or have a form of Tourettes.
