Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

I had been looking forward to meeting Darwyn Cooke at the Motor City Comic Con today, but he cancelled a few weeks ago. I woke up to this instead.

Of course the best way to support Darwyn and his family right now is to pick up some of his books. I'd offer recommendations, but you really can't go wrong with any of his work.

It appears he has lost the battle. Damn, he was a unique talent in this industry whose work I always looked forward to.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

Damn, I woke up in the middle of the night with the stomach flu, only to see people posting about his death.

2016 can just knock it the fuck off.

I'm going to a comic con tomorrow to see a panel by Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy. It will be interesting to see if little tributes start popping up there.

Now I'm seeing reports of his death may have been premature.

Further confirmation on his blog.

I've been devastated by this news.

I decided to take the money that I would have spent at the comic con this weekend and donate it to Hero Initiative instead. I urge others to donate as well.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

I just got back from the last day of Wizard World Des Moines. One vendor had knocked the price of their $1 books down to 50 cents, and I found issues 1-7 of Creator-Owned Comics, a series with a name so boring it might as well be Beige Comics, but there are several Darwyn Cooke stories in the run that I've never read.

I think the series ended with issue 8, so now I need to track that down.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never really read New Frontier or anything else by Cooke. I did buy and read the first issue or two of it back at release and immediately knew it was an instant classic. It was during my mostly out of collecting phase; so his stuff was in the mental 'save the best for last' pile.

I started reading the collections the other night and am loving it. Hope to finish it and watch the animated series today.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

New Frontier was the best story out of mainstream comics in the past 20 years. I bought the individual issues, then the TPB, then the Absolute Edition, and re-read the same tale without hesitation. The Absolute Edition alone is a treasure, just to have all that amazing artwork in larger format.

RIP to a master.

I love my New Frontier absolute. I got it signed by Cooke at NYCC in 2008 and he drew a little Hal Jordan in it.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

I have the absolute but haven't finished it because it's such an awkward size.

I really liked the Batman-Spirit one-shot, so I picked up the Spirit TPBs and love them. I've also read one of his Parkers and some Catwoman. Last year I got the Graphic Ink and read through much of it. I especially liked his Jonah Hex.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

This news came out of the blue and I'm sad we've seen his last work. I'll check out "The Twilight People" somewhere down the line.

Like many of you, I have "The New Frontier" Absolute Edition, and "Graphic Ink". In addition to the regular "Parker" books, I also bought "The Martini Edition", which collects the first two Parker books, "The Hunter" and "The Outfit" in an oversized hardcover edition-with an additional 65 pages of Darwyn Cooke material-including a new story and a slipcase! It'll cost you a little over $50, but its a terrific collectible.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

I was in a comic shop on Saturday evening looking over a copy of Graphic Ink. I had hesitated purchasing it previously because I already own the Spirit and Jonah Hex trades, Batman: Ego, and Absolute New Frontier. But when I saw that the collection included most (if not all) of the fabulous wraparound covers he did for DC recently, I resolved to order a copy next paycheck.

Then I got home and read the news on the AV Club.

And now I keep thinking about Cooke's piece on his reaction to Donald Westlake's death, and all of the wonderful stories and art we will never get to see.

2016 sucks.

Maybe I'll switch my MYO challenge to a Cooke theme.

Wait, what do we have besides New Frontier?

Edit to add: Wow, I'm really out of it today. You meant the comic challenge, I was thinking media.

The club dancing scenes in Batman Beyond were also done by Darwin.

I guess you could squint and count any of the various films based on the Parker books.

He did a lot of DCAU storyboarding, any of those eps should count.

Re: Darwyn Cooke Battling Aggressive Cancer

RIP Darwyn Cooke

I read New Frontier after it was collected. Man, one of the best DC stories out there. I mean it was a great comic in general, but it managed to really bring the DCU together, even if it wasn't in continuity.

I wanted to check out Minutemen too.
