The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Holiday Comic Book Challenge - 11/22/15 to 01/02/16

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the 21st, and ends at dawn on the 3rd
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

From last year, 'official' now:

Figured we'd start a few days before Thanksgiving and end just after New Year's Day.

As with the DVD Challenge, the book doesn't have to be specifically Holiday themed, but just at least mention it or take place during the time frame.

Maybe we'll be inclusive and include all Holidays here; and not just the big three of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's?

And let's include comic strips and comic-y books in all these Challenges too, ok?

I'll hold my spot here. Last year I didn't read many things that qualified. I think I might also catch up with Astro City during this challenge.

I always assumed we were.

12/16
1. The Toyman's Christmas List* (single page from Superman Adventures #41, reprinted in Graphic Ink: The DC Comics Art of Darwyn Cooke)

12/18
2. The Batman's Last Christmas (Brave and the Bold 184, reprinted in The Greatest Batman Stories Ever Told vol. 2, 2007 edition)

Very little reading this month, family and friend drama, some overtime, blah blah the usual excuses.

Nothing I've read so far has qualified. I'm reading the Darwyn Cooke Graphic Ink book at the moment.

Same here, I feel like my reading has slowed down quite a bit the last few months.

That book includes a single page called The Toyman's Christmas List. I'm totally counting it!

As usual, completely failed in my plans to read hundreds of books this Challenge; and bought more than I read. Maybe 2016 will be different......

I read the equvalent of two issues of Bill Corbett's Super Powered Revenge Christmas. I thought it was only 20-some pages, but it turned out to be a complete graphic novel. I didn't start reading it until the 30th.

How was that? As an MST junkie and holiday comic collector you'd think I'd have read it already....

Batman 285 - A villain tries to rob Gotham of Christmas.
DC Comics Presents 67 - Supes teams up with Santa Claus.
Fantastic Four 564 - Doh! I only bought this issue not realizing it was just a part one. Scottish town seems too good to be true as the FF makes a family visit at Christmas.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 14 & 16 - Halloween and Christmas issues
The Witching Hour 28 - Santa cover.
Batman and the Outsiders 19 -
Looney Tunes 73 - Daffy as a replacement reindeer!

It's ok so far. Not super great. It was free from attending one of the Rifftrax live shows.
