The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
The proposal thread for this last month seemed to generate some good discussion so I figured I'd try a monthly thread. Could do multiple, one for 15 years, one for 20, etc; but maybe just one is enough?
I'm hoping that 25 years is a good compromise and this will generate some monthly discussion. Feel free to change that search engine's settings to 30 or 20 or whatever years are more appropriate for your comic book history and join in. So, what were you reading 25 years ago today? http://www.dcindexes.com/features/ne...990&sort=alpha Screenshots coming shortly..... |

That's not right. That's 35 years ago. Couldn't figure out why I wasn't reading anything and then I got to X-Men 138...

I'll edit the pics and links later. And wow, I'm old because I remember so much of that list. Edit to add: link fixed and pics removed. |

Me too. I think I'd like 35 years ago better than 25. I was thinking 1980 was just before I got back into comics, but I definitely bought DC Comics Presents #26 brand new.
I obviously don't mind multiple threads, but not sure what's best for this sort of topic. I guess a thread for 35 years would get at least a few of us reminiscing in it; then the same few plus others in a 25 year thread; then the same plus. Even more in a 15; but that might be overkill. |

Yeah, I'm not sure what the year range preference is, but iirc there were several too young for 35 or maybe even 25.

Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
July 1990 I was still in full on X-Men mode and it was before speculation time. So for me it was only:
Uncanny X-Men 267 Uncanny X-Men 268 X-Factor 58 X-Factor: Prisoner of Love 1 But I think this is right around the time of my first job so I should start having some disposable income in a few months. |
Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
I didn't start reading until fall of '91, so I guess I'll see you guys in September 2016.

Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
So Spider-man #2 by Todd McFarlane came out this month. Am I wrong in thinking he only did the first arc "Torment"....never mind just looked myself and he was there up until #16. I knew Image was 2 years away so I couldn't figure out the timing.

Fall of 91 for me too actually.

I have probably 15 of that issue. Sad considering the gatefold is the only one you really need.

Uncanny #267 is a blur to me other than being the second part of the Gambit introduction. All I really remember about it is the story of how Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio and Scott Williams produced the entire issue in about a week after the originally scheduled creative couldn't do the issue. Issue #268 is a classic and still highly regarded as maybe the best issue of the Claremont/Lee run. It took New Warriors about a year to really find it's groove, but the early issues, #3 included, are still fun. Oh, and somehow I got a hold of that issue of Nightbreed as well. I don't remember where I got it, but it wasn't anything I was remotely interested in outside of the nudity. I don't think I ever even read it. |
Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
I think the only two books from that month that I've actually reread are Hate #2 and Thanos Quest.

Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
My period of peak buying was about 32-34 years ago. I did get back into the hobby a few years ago, but have only picked up a few floppies here and there, concentrating on trades.

edit: didn't realize the list was that long when pasting into the little reply box! I think about how much money I could have saved!!! I'm right there with you. My list looks almost exactly the same as yours. (I was buying nearly all Marvel and DC super-hero titles during that time.) And most are still in longboxes, not having been touched since around that time (if I even got to reading them in the first place; I'd say about a quarter are still unread). This thread is a good reminder to go through my boxes and reread what I've got-- and then get rid of what I don't feel I'll ever look at again. |

My brother is finally starting to do this with his collection. He's got upwards of 300 long boxes in his attic.
At least everything I've amassed over the years is worth pretty much nothing, dollar-wise, so it should be easier to cull the herd without worrying about getting top dollar. |
Re: The First Monthly '25 Years Ago This Month' Thread - July 2015
25 years ago? Oh boy, I was buying pretty much every mainstream superhero book that Marvel and DC were putting out each month. Practically everything listed at the link and some you wouldn't expect, like Alf. I had discovered my local comic book shop but was still splitting my purchases with a newsstand, which would soon end.
Some issues stick out more than others. I remember liking the art in that Doctor Strange issue and that is one of the more striking Batman covers on Detective from the period. Looking back, I don't think this was one of the better periods in Marvel's and DC's history. Things seemed to change for the better over the course of the next year. |
