Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Today's Humble Bundle has some stuff that work for June's Real Challenge, and is a great deal.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
So July looks pretty solid for Science Fiction and Fantasy. Technically that will include any superhero book I guess, but I'd encourage people to avoid them and concentrate on, you know, science fiction and fantasy books.
Any more thoughts on what to do for August? I'm not so sure about Older-Than-You. Maybe another Make-Your-Own? |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Probably too niche-y, but:
-Comic strips -Team/ensemble -Differently abled (Daredevil, Doom Patrol chief) or non-human (might be too horror-y) -Female-centric |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Maybe we should separate Science Fiction and Fantasy genres into two separate challenges; Sci Fi in July and Fantasy in August. They are so different it might make sense to view them individually especially with comics.

Tons of great stuff in both genres. Two back to back months where people hopefully stay away from superheroes. But also two back to back months for we sad superhero zombies. |

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
I'm cool with that, though I did have a bunch of fantasy stuff lined up to start reading next week.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Somewhere, I have an old Conan comic book, and I still have to find time to sit down and read my UFO Encounters. And Godzilla comic book, along with my JSA Comic Books I got for Christmas would probably work too, right?

JSA technically counts for either, but there are plenty of other months for superhero books. Lots of qualifying freebies at Dark Horse and Comixology. One could easily get to 100 just from the freebies I imagine. July thread is up. http://forum.dvdtalk.com/comic-book-...l#post12521961 |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Initially I wasn't fond of the "outside your comfort zone" idea and thought about sitting it out but decided I'll go for 'pulp' comics like The Shadow and Red Sonja because I have a backlog and despite enjoying high fantasy and noir styling in other mediums never exposed myself to those genres in comics. Considering superheros can be considered pulp I'm not sure how much of a deviation that is but I suppose sticking to non-superhero pulp stuff would be fine if not too general.
Edit: I suppose I could alternatively read Transformers or Dungeons/Dragons after going for those super cheap IDW Humble Bundles as blind buys. |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
I'm not exactly sure what I'll be reading. Maybe Crumb's Genesis. I'm pretty comfortable with Crumb, but haven't read the bible directly in decades.
I think there was some stuff in the Humble Bundles I wasn't really interested in, but came with stuff I wanted. Those might work. |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
September thread is up, that will make it a full year of Comic Book Challenges!

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
And with this just now starting Horror Challenge, we have completed a full year of these things. Thanks for playing along with me everyone. I definitely haven't hit my goal of 100 books a month very often, but these Challnges are getting me to read a bit more than before.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Your dedication to them is commendable, Trevor.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
Thanks for everything, Trevor.
My total for the last 12 months was 1,017 issues. That doesn't count anything I read that didn't fit the challenges. I definitely made a dent in my backlog with this. |

My main purposes in starting them to were inspire some new discussion, and encourage more reading, so both were accomplished at least to some degree! I'm torn this month. I had been planning for weeks to minimize my involvement in the movie challenge and concentrate on horror comics all month; but now that October is here so many horror films and TV shows are screaming out to me. |
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
im gonna try and read 5 issues between each movie watch too keep up with my reading
|
Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread
I decided to count up my 2015 challenge totals. This didn't count anything that didn't fit the theme of the challenge months, or the monthly titles I still read (unless they did count, like the October issue of The Walking Dead).
I read 950 issues as part of these challenges. Not bad, though I would have liked to have broken 1,000. |

I could always reread my LSH/Time Trapper or Warlord stuff, but for my money I think it'd be too much work on your part for too short a stretch. |

I should have started it for the rest of you, but figured there'd be little interest in it anyway. But I do hope to be organized by 2020! I'll start that Marvel Challenge thread now before I forget. |

Also, we should start thinking about what to do in April for our yearly "to be determined" open month. Last year, we did Avengers to counterbalance the March of DC and to coincide with the opening of the second Avengers film. I'm not positive of the timing on the Batman vs Superman movie release, but perhaps we could mirror last year and do Batman/Superman this year?

I think Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman would be good, since she seems to be a pretty prominent part of BvS.
