Tons of great stuff in both genres. Two back to back months where people hopefully stay away from superheroes. But also two back to back months for we sad superhero zombies.

Any arguments before I finalize this idea?

And July for Sci-Fi and August for Fantasy?

I'm cool with that, though I did have a bunch of fantasy stuff lined up to start reading next week.

Me too (mostly sword and sorcery), but that's OK.

Somewhere, I have an old Conan comic book, and I still have to find time to sit down and read my UFO Encounters. And Godzilla comic book, along with my JSA Comic Books I got for Christmas would probably work too, right?

Conan next month.

JSA technically counts for either, but there are plenty of other months for superhero books.

Lots of qualifying freebies at Dark Horse and Comixology. One could easily get to 100 just from the freebies I imagine.

July thread is up.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

Initially I wasn't fond of the "outside your comfort zone" idea and thought about sitting it out but decided I'll go for 'pulp' comics like The Shadow and Red Sonja because I have a backlog and despite enjoying high fantasy and noir styling in other mediums never exposed myself to those genres in comics. Considering superheros can be considered pulp I'm not sure how much of a deviation that is but I suppose sticking to non-superhero pulp stuff would be fine if not too general.

Edit: I suppose I could alternatively read Transformers or Dungeons/Dragons after going for those super cheap IDW Humble Bundles as blind buys.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

I'm not exactly sure what I'll be reading. Maybe Crumb's Genesis. I'm pretty comfortable with Crumb, but haven't read the bible directly in decades.

I think there was some stuff in the Humble Bundles I wasn't really interested in, but came with stuff I wanted. Those might work.

And with this just now starting Horror Challenge, we have completed a full year of these things. Thanks for playing along with me everyone. I definitely haven't hit my goal of 100 books a month very often, but these Challnges are getting me to read a bit more than before.

Your dedication to them is commendable, Trevor.

Thanks for everything, Trevor.

My total for the last 12 months was 1,017 issues. That doesn't count anything I read that didn't fit the challenges.

I definitely made a dent in my backlog with this.

You're all quite welcome.

My main purposes in starting them to were inspire some new discussion, and encourage more reading, so both were accomplished at least to some degree!

I'm torn this month. I had been planning for weeks to minimize my involvement in the movie challenge and concentrate on horror comics all month; but now that October is here so many horror films and TV shows are screaming out to me.

im gonna try and read 5 issues between each movie watch too keep up with my reading

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

I decided to count up my 2015 challenge totals. This didn't count anything that didn't fit the theme of the challenge months, or the monthly titles I still read (unless they did count, like the October issue of The Walking Dead).

I read 950 issues as part of these challenges. Not bad, though I would have liked to have broken 1,000.

Sweet! 1000 sounds like a great goal for 2016. I'm on pace for that already, if I read 12 books today.....

I could always reread my LSH/Time Trapper or Warlord stuff, but for my money I think it'd be too much work on your part for too short a stretch.

I'm ashamed to admit that I actually planned to have a little Time Travel Comic Mini-Challenge, but didn't do it mainly because I just didn't make the time to get any books ready to read. My comic collection is currently buried behind/under dozens of other things, and moving boxes around isn't fun with this shoulder issue.

I should have started it for the rest of you, but figured there'd be little interest in it anyway. But I do hope to be organized by 2020!

I'll start that Marvel Challenge thread now before I forget.

I'm not positive of the timing on the Batman vs Superman movie release, but perhaps we could mirror last year and do Batman/Superman this year?

Sounds good, a holy trinity Challenge it is then! Unless we change our minds before March 31st of course...

I'm going to set up the October thread later today.

Also, I'm working on a personal checklist to use each month, to help me get my money's worth out of various aspects of my collection. So far, I've come up with this:

Read something from my:

Comixology -
Dark Horse digital -
DC -
FCBD books -
Groupees bundles -
Humble bundles -
Marvel -
original graphic novel -
physical collection -
physical single issue -
3D book -
Treasury edition -
TwoMorrows-

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

I guess it's never too early to try to decide what we're going to do for the rotating monthly genre/topic for our March and April Challenges.

March is rotating company. This will be the third year, and we did DC and Marvel already. Do we want to pick one of the larger independents, or group all non-big two into the month? Or skip independents and just rotate Marvel/DC?

April is the To Be Determined Challenge, and open to just about any idea. I believe we did Avengers in 2015 and DC's Trinity last year.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

It could be interesting to do one or two publishers like Image or Dark Horse just to mix things up.

This is purely self-interest, but what about a cosmic theme to tie in with GotG 2? It'd be a lot more limiting than past years, and largely overlapping with the sci-if challenge, though. And it'd need some defining. But I have a ton of this stuff I want to read.

So March is Company Month. We've done DC and Marvel. What's next? Image? Dark Horse? All independents lumped together? Other?

How about Pick Your Own Company? Possibly with a non big two stipulation?

I'd be fine with that. I've been meaning to start reading Buffy season 8. Now that season 11 is coming out, I am realizing how much I missed those characters.

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

So, Challenge enthusiasm, while never stellar, is definitely lessening. But I'm undeterred and will continue posting. I'll be gone most of the day, so was just going to pick a random thing for our April "to be determined" topic, so that it'd be here before April starts.

But instead I'll hope for suggestions here and will post a thread when I get home around midnight. In a rush, so perhaps I've forgotten suggestions posted here or in last year's thread.

davidh777 03-31-17 10:55 AM

Re: DVDTalk Comic Book Challenge Omnibus Thread

I did suggest a cosmic theme earlier.

I've read a few different Image titles this month but not discussed them.

Just in time for the final day of the challenge, Comixology is having an Image Wondercon sale. No terms specified so I assume it's BOGO.

Home for a minute before running out to see The Mads tonight.

Cosmic sounds good. Does the second Guardians film drop next month by any chance?
