The First Annual DVDTalk Holiday Comic Book Challenge - 11/17/14 to 01/02/15

Figured we'd start a few days before Thanksgiving and end just after New Year's Day.

As with the DVD Challenge, the book doesn't have to be specifically Holiday themed, but just at least mention it or take place during the time frame.

Maybe we'll be inclusive and include all Holidays here; and not just the big three of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's?

And let's include comic strips and comic-y books in all these Challenges too, ok?

I just read a holiday story in the first Don Rosa book last night, d'oh.

Batman: The Long Halloween would be a good book to read during this challenge. I think it covers 13 holidays.

Fwiw, I made a generic thread for general Challenge discussion; so we can stick to topic in the monthly threads.
Challenge Omnibus

I lost the pile of Ambush Bug comics I was working through (I almost hope my daughter stole them, actually), so I might as well start with some holiday comics. Found a few Thanksgiving books on Comixology.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Holiday Comic Book Challenge - 11/17/14 to 01/02/15

I've used the last two challenges to plow through reading backlog. I don't have the same easily identifiable backlog for holiday books, but if issues count in the course of my regular reading, I'll be sure to include them here.

Ordered a few more of the classic Walt Disney's Christmas Parade collections on Amazon to go with the couple that I own. Those and Comixology will be my primary sources this Challenge. Carl Barks was so good.

To encourage discussion, here's a Vine of this guy's best Christmas-themed issues:

http://www.comicvine.com/profile/etr...-comics/33873/

#1 ranked? DC Super Star Holiday Special #21, you have to check out this cover:

I've never read the issue but it looks awesome, including a Frank Miller Batman tale where a contract is taken out on...Santa. Anyone own it?

I always liked that cover but don't recall if I've ever actually read the issue.

One of favorite books as a kid. Haven't found it yet, but it's in one of my boxes...

I've got the Miller section in the Year One/DKR hardcover that someone (Walden?) put out in the 80s. I'm surprised DC hasn't reprinted that issue more.

I'm sorry. I'll try to remember to put the date in the thread title next time. ;)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I'm participating!

The last issue in the Muppets omnibus was a Christmas issue. I'm too lazy to figure out what day of the challenge this is, so I'll just do this one by issues.

Issue 1
Muppets 4

I have that issue of DC Superstars. It is Miller's first Batman story he worked on. Another good Christmas story worth reading is JLA #110. It was the second appearance of John Stewart.

I have these also...

I use this to check out covers...too lazy to pull out the actual books. Mostly old books, though. :D

I'm on the board!

Honestly I'm not crazy about Boom!'s treatment of the Disney properties, but I picked up this volume and just read "A Wonderful Christmas Story" by Romano Scarpa. It's a fairly new Mickey story, thankfully not a note-for-note version of A Christmas Carol, but not all that memorable either.

I know! It's not like I was champing at the bit or missed out on counting something. :)

I miss the glory days of the 100-Page Super Spectaculars. I do pick up an occasional floppy when they aren't exorbitantly priced.

My Carl Barks Christmas set arrived!

Speaking of that 30% Amazon coupon, there's a new 25% one.

That may have been the very first back issue I ever purchased myself from a comic book store. The lure of 100 pages was very tough to resist as a youngster. The pages are yellow and brittle, but I still have it.

Who knew? Frosty the Snowman had his very own comic book in the 1950s from Plastic Man's creator, Jack Cole. It came out before the famous television adaptation.

Back then it was the literary the only way to read GA/SA DC stories. Reprints weren't as readily available as they are today. They had reprints before the 100 pagers but you usually only got one because the other 2 stories would be new on the 52 pagers.

I really need to update my reading in these threads more regularly. I think I read at least 50 holiday books, finishing off yesterday with some Ghostbusters and Marvel Holiday specials.

Maybe I'll read some New Years specific stories today if I can find them.
