The First Annual DVDTalk Comedy Comic Book Challenge - November 2014

So we might as well follow along with the viewing Challenges; this one will be November.

Any thoughts on if themes or subset picks or the like would be useful?

I'm thinking not.

Insread of following the challenges maybe do more like a read club where we pick reading material for the week to maybe engage in conversation? (Like the failed horror club) just a suggestion only bc it would expose myself and others into new material and well i dont know of many comedies and holiday books to fill in the month

I was thinking of that, but I think getting multiple of us to either own or buy specific books would be even more difficult than for the film clubs we had.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Comedy Comic Book Challenge - 2014

For me the challenge was a great motivator to work through unread backlog, but I could see following the pre-set movie challenges could make some months tougher than others.

Maybe sub in something like a DC/Marvel month (or individual months for each), a creator-focused month (rather than everyone read Alan Moore, people pick books that they're reading because Moore or Matt Fraction or Hickman or whoever wrote/drew them). There could be an Eisner-winner/nominee challenge.

But maybe getting too specific like that cuts down on participation.

I'm in for comedy, I've got a lot of stuff to make my way through.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Comedy Comic Book Challenge - 2014

Good ideas there joe. I think we can plan month to month and work those ideas in.

I think we're good with comedy for November. I'm not a huge 'funny book' fan, but it is a huge part of comic history, with tons of content available and lots of fans to this day. I'm defintely pulling out my Plop! comics for the month.

For December (or just before Thanksgiving thru January 1st) I was leaning towards doing a Holiday Comic Challenge. But then, Holiday comics (and movies) are things I personally collect. I can see where the options to you normal people would be quite limited.

It's kind of fun to speculate about possibilities for translating challenges into a comics theme. Granted, some of these would be a little thin to fill a full month depending on how much someone is reading.

January > comics based on TV series
February > might not have enough action/adventure comics to run a challenge
March > Eisner winners
April > indies
May > Make your own
June > historical settings
July > sci-fi fantasy
August >
September > boutique labels such as Vertigo?

Off the top of my head, I can only think of having a Frank Miller Batman story that fits into Christmas, as well as some Barks Duck stuff. And a chapter of The Long Halloween, if I'm remembering right.

It would be a challenge, but I might be up for trying.

There are tons of Christmas stories out there. Many series have Christmas or Thanksgiving or other holiday themed issues at those times of year. Mainly Christmas of course. There are hundreds of Christmas stories already on Comixology for example.

Depending on your collection a comicdatabase search may show holiday stories sprinkled in all kinds of series.

There was also Batman 219...only reason I remember was because it was the first issue of Batman that Neal Adams drew. JLA 110 was a Christmas story and it was the second appearance of John Stewart.

It's funny you should mention it, tonight I read Hellblazer 49, which was a Christmas story.

But I'm counting it toward horror, since it's still Oct.

You should have waited until sundown tonight; it would have counted for both!

Doh! I'm confusing my Challenges again. I guess Hellblazer can't count for comedy.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Comedy Comic Book Challenge - 2014

Am I going to be the only one updating this month? Very well, it motivates me to read more.

Muppet Show 4 (I mistakenly typed this issue in yesterday when I meant 3).

The Muppet comics are surprisingly dense, mostly a lot of two page gags. It takes me longer to read them than most modern comics. They really capture the feel of the 70s show.

Books ready so far: 7

Spoiler:

Day 1:

The Muppet Show Comic Book 1

The Muppet Show Comic Book 2
Aw Yeah Comics 2-3

Day 3

The Muppet Show comic 3

It's too bad the Doom Patrol issue isn't included in the Grant Morrison sale, that would have been perfect for this challenge.
