Dark Horse loses Star Wars license by end of the year (to Marvel of course)
http://www.darkhorse.com/Blog/1552/end-era
While this was inevitable once Disney bought both Marvel and the Star Wars franchise, it's finally coming to fruition. I'm not exactly sure what it means for the comics themselves; I know licensed stuff like the old Marvel Star Wars stuff and Transformers and GI Joe were able to be republished by other companies. But if you have fond memories of some DH Star Wars comics, take a look at the omniboo soonish. |

Sucks for Dark Horse, I assume. I wonder how big a loss it is for them. I certainly bought a lot of titles a few years ago, though not much recently.

The real question is how much of the "lore" that Dark Horse created is Marvel going to keep. Or are they going to start over from scratch.

Given that Brian Wood currently writes for Marvel, I could see them continuing his Star Wars series there. It's been well received and is selling well.

The move isn't a surprise. A lot of Star Wars comic fans have been expecting it since Disney purchased LucasFilm. I stopped reading the Dark Horse books in the early 2000s and only recently picked up the Ongoing Series and The Star Wars mini.
I hope Dark Horse plans to go out with a bang. |

Edit for more details: Brian Wood @brianwood 3 Jan To answer all, the Star Wars book I'm writing ends with #20. I'm assuming it'll all get collected. (1/2) Brian Wood @brianwood 3 Jan No reason to think Marvel has interest in me writing SW. I'm sure everyone and their mothers will want to write a Marvel Star Wars book! 2/2 https://twitter.com/brianwood/status/419172572656566272 https://twitter.com/brianwood/status/419172856334127104 So, looks like he is off the book with #20 and doesn't expect to be offered a chance to continue any Star Wars at Marvel. |

Marvel is going to inherit the license in time for the new films, films which will likely contradict the EU. This puts Marvel in a position to not only produce works based on the new films, but also have their own New EU (EU NOW!?) based on the new movie canon. And that's probably the best way for Marvel to handle it. They've got to go with the flow of the film rather than to cater to the current EU continuity. I forget what website I read it on (it could have even been linked from a post somewhere here) but Marvel's output of Disney titles is incredibly low compared to what BOOM! was putting out when they had the license. Marvel also has higher standards for sales numbers even on their licensed properties. So it's likely a lot of Dark Horse Star Wars wouldn't make the cut at Marvel, and Marvel is probably going to focus on a few SW titles at best once they start producing the books. I don't see Marvel keeping or reprinting any of the Dark Horse EU right off the bat. If there are certain in-demand titles, maybe they'll buy the files necessary for reproduction and do it then. But that will just be a profit driven move and not a creative move to incorporate the Dark Horse EU into the new Disney SW Universe. |

Would not be surprised, I oddly hate when any series has the word new in it.

Speaking of Disney titles... Marvel reprinted/got the licensing to the BOOM stuff, but I think Fantagraphics has the old-school duck/mickey license (and those are awesome, though I wish they'd number them) and Papercutz has the Tinker bell license (which my daughter loves). I wonder why they don't take those back... some kind of contract that's in place (I think they yanked it from Gladstone back in the day pretty quickly)

I believe the Fantagraphics duck books are numbered, just not on the spine. They're publishing them out of order because they didn't want to wait a few years before getting to the prime material.

Gladstone was better than Boom, which was better than Marvel. Also a big thumbs up from me on the Fantagraphics volumes.

If they took it back, we could get another release of Life And Times of Scrooge McDuck. I've wanted that for a while now. I just never thought of jumping on it back when it was in print.

Fantagraphics is starting to do Dona Rosa duck books this year. I assume this will come back into print through them eventually.

Re: Dark Horse loses Star Wars license by end of the year (to Marvel of course)
I've been frustrated by the Rosa books being in constant limbo so I was thrilled to see them on the Fantagraphics schedule. I actually signed up for their kickstarter for that prize. :)
At Emerald City Comic-Con in 2012, I randomly ran across Rosa at one of the side tables. I hadn't heard anything about his being there. He just was at the table signing stuff and wearing a shirt that said "Don Rosa: I'm Big in Europe (especially Finland)." A shame considering his history with the ducks. Spoiler:

He's going to be at Planet Comic Con in March. I definitely need a Scrooge sketch.

If this means that Dark Empire is officially wiped off the face of the planet, then I am all for it.

I am disappointed that they couldn't air a final season (or a made for TV movie or whatever), but fuck me bringing Maul back was so stupid. He went from this silent badass to some whiny bitch. I was so happy when Palpatine kicked his ass.

Re: Dark Horse loses Star Wars license by end of the year (to Marvel of course)
I'd heard those episodes might have been completed. They are going to be in the 'lost' episodes, which apparently there are so many of, it is being called season six. When I heard it, they were discussing that the comic adaption might be released before the episodes are.
I still think the final episodes of season five make for a good series finale. Series started with Ashoka joining the Jedi knights & ends with her leaving the Jedi Order. If not that, series should have ended just before Episode 3 began. Maybe the final shot of the series is the two Jedi fighters diving into battle above Coruscant. |
