Think you have a large comic book collection? Think again.
This guy has 90,000 comics. I thought my collection of 30 longboxes was large enough, but he has 319 longboxes.

'I have them racked so they don't need to be moved around much. If I need to get a comic I go to my database, see what box the comic is in, go to that box in the storage rack and pull a single box to get the comic I want.'
Still collecting, Bob reads around 115 comics a month - new and old.

On a side note, I never understood getting busts like that. Seems super expensive and there are so many different ones. Of course, that's coming from someone who collects action figures and "dolls" (Hot Toys).

He says his first comic he ever bought was Amazing Spider-Man #88, so Spidey is his foundation, yet the article mentions he isn't collecting Spider-Man anymore. He is likely one of the biggest Spidey fans in the world, so that really speaks volumes about how much Marvel has fucked up Spidey with shit like Sins Past and One More Day if even a hardcore fan like this no longer bothers to collect it.

He used to be a co-host on the Comic Book Page podcast for quite a while and frequently posted on their forum. www.comicbookpage.com
The page has some other information about his collection.

I stopped reading during the neverending Clone Saga in the 90s. I keep up with what is going on via message boards, and everything I have heard about stuff like Sins Past, One More Day, and now Superior Spider-Man doesn't make me regret my decision one single bit.

I had about thirty long boxes but got rid of them this year because I was sick of looking at them and taking up space. I don't totally regret it but I do miss some of them sometimes!

You wish. He's married. He hangs out on the Eleven O'Clock Comics forum. He's a pretty cool guy.
He got the record when he saw some guy in Australia claim to have the world's largest comic book collection at 60,000 (or something like that) and thought "Hell, I have more than that." So he called up Guinness and asked them what he needed to do to get in the record book. He's been pretty blase about it -- he's sure somebody is going to come along any day now with a bigger collection; he recognizes that he just happened to be the first to call up Guinness.
The other really cool thing: to get the record, the collection had to be displayed to the public. So he put the word out on message boards and at UC Irvine and basically had an open house this spring. And he basically gave away a ton of comics to everyone who showed up (stuff he had duplicates of).
Anyway, here's the thread where he described the process and posted pics:

No way I could do am open house if I were him, I would be so paranoid that something would get stolen. I mean with all those figures and stuff all over the place how easy would it be for people to just take something and make off with it?

That's a lot of comics! And that's coming from someone with 30ish long boxes and 10 short boxes!

It's a surprisingly neat and organized collection, for one so large. Most collections that size end up locked away in a storage facility or warehouse.

I heard of one guy with a large and expensive collection that did have his stuff stolen from a storage complex. Inside job too. You've got to invest in a secure place and never tell people where it is, which is exactly the opposite of what this guy (that I've heard about) apparently did.

Of which, he says only 20% are from the big 2, and his favorite right now is Valiant's Harbinger (can't fault him on that).

Spidey was my first and favorite too. I dropped out in the early 90s -- probably some time during the Michelinie/Bagley run. Not because it was bad, but just because I outgrew superhero comics. And while I grew back into superhero comics a few years later, every time I checked in on Spider-Man, I did not like what I saw. Finally Brand New Day came along, and I really did enjoy that and have been reading regularly ever since.

I dropped spidey and comics in general in the 90's with the clone saga... got back in around 2003-2004 and read up to SINS, and baled again... this time only on spidey, as I still have my pull list everyweek

I don't bother to insure my comic collection. I have 30 longboxes full, and comics are my #1 hobby, but if I lost them all in a fire or tornado or whatever I wouldn't bother to replace them.

I'm the same way. If I lost my whole collection, I wouldn't bother replacing it. I'd probably force myself to go digital or give up reading comics all together.
I mentioned this to my wife once and she jokingly replied "Where are the matches?"
