Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

Collector's Paradise in Pasadena restocked their $1 bins this week and there was a lot of good stuff within. They had Cerebus #4 to #100 with a few issues missing here and there. I ended up getting issues #56 and 57 for normalman's first appearance. They also had an almost full run of Airboy including a bunch of one shots. I grabbed Air Fighters Classics #1 - 6 because I've been looking for those forever.

I also grabbed the three issue Untold Legend of the Batman mini-series. But these were from a free giveaway so they were smaller in size than a regular comic. Got some Atlas Comics books, Captain America #300, Time Bandits adaptation, some Golden Age Jerry Iger reprints and Adventure Comics #384 (just to name a few).

Something I didn't pick up but was tempted was an original run of Howard Chaykin's Black Kiss. It was only missing a couple of issues. They also had some old Whitman Buck Roger books. Lotta full runs in the boxes and it was hard to narrow my purchases down.

^^^ Nice finds. The Legend mini series was good. I haven't read it since it came out. The Supergirl Adventure story was really pushing the envelope for it's time.

From WonderCon and the lead up to WonderCon:

Early last week, I got my first Loot Crate which included an exclusive Harley Quinn comic:

A few days before the show, I hit Collector's Paradise in Pasadena again before the show and grabbed a bunch of $1 books including - Black Kiss #1 and Cowboys & Aliens (First Printing) signed by the creator:

At WonderCon, I filled two major holes in my collection - Avengers Annual #7 and Star Wars 2: World of Fire. I didn't even know the Star Wars book existed until two years ago. Been trying to find it for a decent price ever since.

Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

I was weak. I pretty much haven't paid cover price for a comic book since the 70s, but all that ended today. I was traveling and passed thru Annapolis Maryland. I always check google maps for comic ships when I have free time while traveling, and found a cool shop called Third Eye Comics. Huge store with more trades than I've seen in any other store, and a huge wall and a half of new releases and comics back to maybe a year old. No older back issues, alas, but a bit of toys and games and such too.

I've been jonesing to try the new Swamp Thing series by original writer Len Wein and artist Kelley Jones, and decided to show this shop some love and bought the first three issues. Went ahead and bought the recent Howling Commandos series too, for some Man-Thing equal time.

What do you guys think of a sticky where we can post pics of raw books and get everyone's opinion on it's grade. Just a thought....

I would say it's VF. Not too sure tho. It's better condition than the one I own (which I got sometime in the late 70s).

There was a small show near me today so I thought I'd swing by. It was pretty empty and the dealers brought in only half their stocks because of WonderCon last week. Most were still exhausted.

The two things of note that I purchased:

Ah yes, I know that Justice League of America cover quite well. I always enjoyed the floating heads on the side of a comic for some reason. Can anyone pinpoint when that practice stopped? Both Marvel and DC used to do it on their team books.

Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

I can't recall another issue with more floating heads than this one.

I liked the floating heads too, oddly enough. I guess because you could see who was slated to appear in that issue.

Glad the FF did it so we would know who'd be in that issue. At least they didn't list the names.

I couldn't stand the Earth 2 Robin. Worst. Costume. Ever.

Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

I want to say the practice stopped for DC after Crisis. There seems to have been a conscious effort by DC editorial to strip out any vestiges of comic book design left over from the 70s in Crisis.

I just briefly scanned through the early covers for the Justice League International issues in the reboot after Crisis and can't find a single floating head example.

I am aware of a handful of ironic retro covers in the 90s that featured floating heads.

The George Perez issues were really good but I think he stopped doing interiors way before that cover.

I always liked how Marvel shoehorned four heroes into three buckets for their "Triple Action" title.

I believe most of the 100 pager Detective Comics had the floating heads.

Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

100-page Super Spectacular issues usually had a litany of heads. I would love to know the cover with the most heads on it. Marvel got pretty crazy with some of their nameless heads, cramming in 15 or more characters.

Someone needs to start a blog dedicated to these heads.

18. Count 'em....18 heads gotta be a record!

That is a lot of heads. I guess you could squeeze in a few more along the bottom row.

Yep, just opened my apparently-monthly-again DCBS order, and there she was.

I'm not overly optimistic, as the charm of the original series was the melding of the characters based on the toys with the Marvel universe and the Marvel characters created for it, and this series has no Marvel license. But I'm trying to clear my mind and go in ready for new things.

Re: What's the last comic (single issue) you bought?

I thought it was so-so. Not sure if I'm picking up #2. If I do, it'll probably be for nostalgia's sake.

I'm in Tampa working on a project and a local store here has a month-long sale. Comics priced $2 to $9.99 are only a $1. $10 and up is half price. They've been around for awhile (apparently since the 90s) so they have a huge backlog of comics and magazines. I was in the store for 3 hours today and only made it halfway through their stock. And that was quickly flipping through stuff. If I did a detailed look through each box, I would have been there all day.

Here's what I got:

http://i1109.photobucket.com/albums/...psc5hopi4y.jpg

Archie:
The Mighty Crusaders#6 - Written by Jerry Siegel!
Fly Man #33
Life with Archie: The Married Life #16 - The sold out wedding of Kevin Keller.

DC:
Action Comics #398 - Good shape. I love "Come on you, cats!"
Action Comics #399 - Good shape. Only grabbed it because I grabbed the issues around it.
Action Comics #400 - A little water-logged.
Action Comics #420 - I owned this at some point so the cover jumped right out at me. Unfortunately, someone cut an ad out of one of the inside pages!
Adventure Comics #400 - Anniversary issue!
DC 100-Page Spectacular #6 - This was the only one I paid half off for. I've ALWAYS wanted it.
Blue Devil #1
Adventures of Superman #424 - Better copy than the one I owned.

Marvel:
Avengers Annual #16 - Second part to the Contest of Champions sequel.
Invaders Annual #1 - Again, I ALWAYS wanted this one.
Star Wars #14 - Replacement copy for mine which was read to shreds.

Misc:
Mighty Magnor #1 - Replacement copy.
Venture #2
Razor Vol. 2 #2 - Chromium!
Valkyrie: Prisoners of the Past - Collection of the first Valkyrie mini-series (3 issues).

I'm going to make a second trip sometime this weekend. Who knows what else is tucked away in there?

I really need to firm up my checklist and catalog my several boxes of doubles. For example, I know I have doubles of that DC Special I would have sent you.
