Joe Kubert Passes, Aged 85

Joe Kubert Passes, Aged 85

Written on August 12, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics

Co-creator of Sergeant Rock, Tor and Ragman, famed for recreating Hawkman, pursuing war comics, founder of the Kubert School, author of Fax from Sarajevo and father to Adam and Andy Kubert, Joe Kubert has passed away, aged 85.

Even now, he had Before Watchmen: Nite Owl on the stands with his own Joe Kubert Presents projects coming out at the end of October from DC Comics,

Richard Bruning, ex of DC Comics, where Joe did much of his best known work, said it best;

Joe Kubert one of the finest men I’ve ever known Rest in peace, Joe.

Shit! Another comic legend gone. The original writers & artists who helped create the comic book industry are nearly gone. And Kubert was one of the greats! I loved his style and it definitely held up all these decades.

R.I.P. Joe. You deserve it.

Sad as Hell, but at least he's got a heck of a legacy.

Not many of the Golden and early Silver age comic book greats are left now. Stan lee and maybe a few others.

With his Kubert school for art, maybe the most influential comic book artist of all time. So many artists went through there that became major comic book artists.

Joe Kubert was one of the best comic book artists to ever live. We'll miss you, Joe.

Joe, wish I could have thank you while your were alive.

I have so many fantasic memories of your art while I was growing up in the 70's.

All your War comics, Batman, Tarzan (and others like him), Ragman...and all the GREAT comic book covers bring back a flood a carefree childhood feelings as if it was only yesterday.

I grew somewhat lonely (Family breakup when I was very young, and not many friends after that), but my enjoyment of comics and your art helped me through those weird pre-teen/teen years.

Your life, art and longevity in your career/life now inspire me in whole different way.

Again, Thanks Joe...

Wow. I just met the guy at the Houston Comicpalooza in May. Seemed like a really good guy. He bragged about his sons, and I thought that was really sweet.

Just saw a news story on this. Surprised and saddened. I never got into war comics, but I loved Kubert's style anyway. When DC took over Tarzan, I really got into how Kubert's art brought the story to life for me - having never been a Tarzan fan before. Truly one of the greats.

Rest in peace, Joe.
