DC Comics Postpones Batman Inc #3 Over “Content That May Be Perceived As Insensitive”

DC Comics Postpones Batman Inc #3 For A Month Over “Content That May Be Perceived As Insensitive”

Written on July 23, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics

In light of the recent events in Aurora, and in consideration of the victims and the families of the shootings, DC Comics has decided to postpone the release of the third issue of Batman Incorporated because the comic contains “content that may be perceived as insensitive in light of recent events”. They are asking any retailers who do receive copies not to put them out for sale.

The comic was originally intended to go on sale on July 25th. The sale date has now been postponed until August the 22nd.

Unless someone shoots up a movie theater, I don't see the point.

You have to figure that's exactly what it is. I remember a Flash story from the early 1990s when someone starts shooting up a movie theatre.

That would be a pretty insane coincidence (and in a Batman title, of all things? -eek-). If so though, it would be a no-brainer decision to make.

Coincidences wouldn't be new for DC. Anyone remember the Superman comic they released on Sept. 12, 2001?

Wow, I never saw that. Stupid college days where I could only afford a couple of books a month.

I found these scans over on CBR. Its supposedly why this issue was delayed.

Every time there's a national tragedy, DC Comics feels obligated to pull one of their upcoming "edgy" comics.

For the Columbine Massacre, they refused to print Hellblazer #141 by Warren Ellis and Phil Jiminez.

For 9/11 they cancelled Bryan Hitch's "Authority: Widescreen" special.

Looks like they're going after Grant Morrison for this one.

Jesus. and I thought the "Court of Owls" storyline was dark. Clearly, I have been neglecting Batman, Inc.

They didn't completely pull it, they just delayed it a couple weeks until the heat is off them. I think it's a good move since the media is probably looking to blame anything possible and comics sales probably can't really take a massive backlash hit in sales in the current day and age.

Well, plus this is a Batman comic and the shooting happened at a Batman movie. There's already a guy suing (among others) Warner Bros. because the movie promotes violence, and I'm sure if DC were a separate entity they would be getting sued separately as well.

Is that a real kid hanging in that second page, or is that a doll?

Somebody buy the guy who scanned those pages a flatbed. I can't tell what the hell is going on. -ohbfrank-

One of my local stores had it on the shelves. Stacks of them.

Yeah, DC had already shipped the comics before the shooting occurred. So they asked the shop owners to hold onto them and not sell them until August, but not all shops actually cared and went ahead and put them up for sale anyway.

Were they marked up to 10 bucks and billed as collector's items?

Haha! Good one! On a semi-related note, I have five copies for sale on eBay for $6 a piece.

$6 is a bargain. A lot of people are scalping them for $30 or more.
