I wasn't really that impressed with the GoG tpb. Seems like the plot was all over the place, like they were told to wrap it up quickly so they just jammed a bunch of scenes in so they could get everything in. Not sure if that was the case, but it sure seemed rushed.

And every time I finish, I lament that I'll have to wait another year to get more of the story (but I'm not going back to floppies... for the first year or so I was getting the floppies, the trades, and then the HC).
Yep, my heart sinks whenever I turn the page and see a huge block of text waiting for me.

I let the first HC sit on my shelf for a year or so, then haven't stopped. Once I ran out of HCs, I started buying the TPBs but I've still been getting the HCs. Have only bought one floppy when I couldn't stand not knowing how one plot point was resolved. I've often thought about rereading earlier volumes to get caught up, but then I burn through the new one and figure I don't need to go back. I do want to reread it from the beginning sometime.

Still haven't found the time to read the GotG. I figure no real rush after I've waited this long.

Re: Invincible Compendium: 2000+ pg of Invincible goodness

It took a lot of willpower to hold off on reading the last HC and restart from the beginning, but it was worth it, so many little dangling plot points that really surface once you read it all in a shorter time span. Plus I gloss over some of those walls of text, since I pretty much know what's going on.

Though now that I think about it, maybe it's just Kirkman's writing, because it also seemed like nearing the end of the last HC after the war, there was a lot of scene-to-scene shifts and stuff being explained in words, not actions, similar to the end of GotG.

After waiting all that time for my pre-order, I finally read the Guarding the Globe TPB. Not amazing, but I liked it fine and will probably read some more.

Can't imagine that actually happens! #99 was a bit boring, nothing new really happens.

Anyone just catchup with #17? Enjoyed it as always, but some of the artwork bothered me again. A lot of the characters looked like this:

I started #17 and realized I had no idea what was going on so I dragged out my #16 as a refresher. I'll be awhile.

Yeah, I had to do the same. I think it'll be time for a full reread by the time the next one comes out.

I need to track down the rest of the Kirkman stuff too, as it seems like more and more characters are showing up.

I just read #17 and enjoyed it--very interesting how they spun off a completely separate storyline, and I like how it unfolded.

As far as other Kirkman, I've read the whole Wolfman run and the Guarding the Globe TPB 1 () but not much else. (I mean, not counting TWD but the stuff in the same universe--e.g., I haven't read Tech Jacket.)

Re: Invincible Compendium: 2000+ pg of Invincible goodness

I started reading TPB 20, realized I was completely lost, and reread #19 (which came out last March) to catch up. Good thing I did!

Spoiler:
This dark Robot arc is pretty interesting, and I'm not sure where it's going. Despite the significant body count, some things like Mark-Eve are like back to before (plus baby, of course), but I imagine he's going to be plotting to take out Robot somehow.

Nice, I'm getting caught up this week as well.

If you don't have the handbook to the Invincible Universe, I noticed they have a used copy at gohastings for like 2$ today before shipping with coupon. They also have v1 of Atom Eve and Rex Splode for ~4.50.

I picked that up when I was in my Atom Eve phase. Not the greatest art, but a good read.

Re: Invincible Compendium: 2000+ pg of Invincible goodness

Sorry to hear this because Invincible is one of the few current books I read, but at least Kirkman can end it on his own terms and not be forced to crank it out beyond its time.

Invincible, a Comic by Robert Kirkman, Writer of The Walking Dead, to End

By GEORGE GENE GUSTINES
AUG. 17, 2016

Robert Kirkman, the creator of The Walking Dead, announced on Wednesday that his superhero series chronicling the adventures of Invincible (who is also known as Mark Grayson) would end next year.

The series published its first issue in January 2003 and will end with issue No. 144 next fall, a significant run for an independently published title. But the series, which has been drawn by Cory Walker, its co-creator, and Ryan Ottley, did not catch the same fire — in comic sales or as a cultural phenomenon — as The Walking Dead, which had its premiere in October 2003 and was later adapted for the popular AMC television series.

In April, The Walking Dead 153 sold 67,358 copies to comic stores; Outcast, another series by Mr. Kirkman that has become a television series, sold 21,261; Invincible was at 12,038.

In a letter released by the publisher, Image Comics/Skybound, Mr. Kirkman noted that while plotting the coming issue he realized that the story was reaching a natural conclusion.

“I’m sure when it’s all said and done, I’ll be sad, and I know I will miss these characters, but for the time being, I’m excited,” he wrote.

With any luck, Invincible, who has weathered high school and college, a world-conquering father, an alien brother and an attack of clones, will get a happy ending with his wife and daughter.

Hmm... In a selfish way I hope this lines up with the hardcover releases, but I am sad to see it go.

Man that sucks. At least it's not due to low sales like the NYT article sort of implies. I feel a little better about it after reading Kirkman's full announcement:

With Kirkman's standing in Image, plus the success of WD, I don't think they would cancel it for low sales. I wonder how the tpbs and hardcovers do sales wise, I know I've never bought a floppy of it (though I did buy early tpbs, then rebought them as hardcovers.

It sells 12K floppies per month. That is not bad for an Image title at all.

Damn. My nerdy claim to fame is that I named the letter page for Invincible.
