A game of cat and mouse

Last night my wife saw a mouse run across the room. It doesn't happen often around here because of the cats. I place decon in the basement for future mice while my wife has it stuck behind the entertainment center. She tries to force it out to my end where I have a container to catch it, but it doesn't go for it and runs under the couch. From there it finds the one small hole in the fabric and gets into the couch, so we turn it over. Now we cut one small hole at one end where we force it out and into the container. The indoor cat won't do anything with it because the kids will scream with excitement and that will make her forget everything else and flee.

But now I have a mouse in a container. Well, time to step up to the big leages and take it out to the shop kitties. The best mouser is Buttercup. She is amazing. When hippies tell you that only humans hunt for sport, they have not met Buttercup. She has taken down woodpeckers while they are pecking her head to get away. I have seen her take down birds in flight. She takes out moles. She stalks the other cats for fun. So I find her by the food and put the container down.

Okay, Buttercup follows the code of conduct for cats and refuses to show interest in what you want her to, so I step it up assuming she just hasn't noticed.

Shit. Still nothing. Buttercup will not see the mouse no matter how much I shake the container. Buttercup eat. Buttercup not have time to notice things. So I step up my game and try to make it more obvious.

Despite the picture, Buttercup still doesn't see it. :gah:

She gets ready to get down and I put the container down first.

Now she sees it. And she is panting. She is ready for the hunt.

Lilly sees the action and decides to check it out. Faster than I can take a picture, Buttercup pounces on Lilly and drives her away. I get ready to take the top off the container and get a picture.

CRAP! It all happens too fast for a picture. Mouse gets about 5 feet away (FAST) but Buttercup pounces just as fast. I see her as she leaves the shop at a leisurely pace to go outside and play with her new toy.

That was my evening.

I know it's rather small and boring in Bumfuck, WA, but I don't think that finding a mouse is either Politics or a World Event.

Nice. Our well fed outdoor cat caught a sparrow the other day.

Truly a metaphor for our poisoned, violent political discourse.

Re: A game of cat and mouse

In a vain attempt to politicize this, I urge you to put cross-hairs on the next mouse. Your entire herd of cats would be all over that.

"The indoor cat won't do anything with it because the kids will scream with excitement and that will make her forget everything else and flee."

Now I'm not trying to paint any picture of your relationship with your family or anything, but just to be clear--you're sure that in the past that it was "excited screaming" and not "hysterical sobbing"?

 3 boys. I'm sure. They wanted to shoot the mouse with an airsoft gun in the house.

Proof that providing guns to people makes them violent.
