DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Is there any other Comic Book Company that puts out books like these? There would be alot of stuff from the 60s that would interest me but more than likely, alot of those companies are out of business and I wouldn't know who owns the rights.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Dark Horse does some phonebook style collections for Conan, and Image has put out two for Savage Dragon (that's much newer).
I'm sure there are others, but that's all the sprung to mind. |
Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
In addition to the Conan and Savage Dragon ones that majorjoe mentioned, here are some others that spring to mind:
John Byrne's Next Men Spawn Normalman Cerebus DNAgents In terms of 60s reprints, DC and Marevel have obviously printed a bunch of their own stuff. DC has reprinted some Charlton stuff from that era as well as the THUNDER Agents, all in their Archives format. Dark Horse has reprinted the Gold Key Magnus and Dr. Solar stuff in a similar format. They've also done a couple of colelctions of Herbie, the Fat Fury. All of this is in $50 color hardcovers, not in Showcase/Essential format. If there's something specific from the 60s you're interested in, ask away and I'm sure someone around here can tell you its status. |
Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
There is a big collection of Shadowhawk as well.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
I forget who is publishing it,but there are a bunch of black and white Judge Dredd collections.I think they have also released collections for some of the other 2000 AD characters.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Will they ever do these in color? I know the intent was to keep costs down, but I really want to read some of these in color.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Big giant phone books in color? Doubtful. Reprints in general? Absolutely. What are you interested in? All the Silver Age Marvel stuff and most of the Silver Age DC stuff (especially the superhero stuff) that has been reprinted in Showcase/Essential format has also been reprinted in Masterwork/Archive format. With Showcase/Essentials, you get 25 or 30 issues in black and white for around $20. For Masterworks/Archives, you get ten issues or so for around $60. But if you're willing to pay for the color (and the better print quality, and the more durable package), then you can get it.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Frankly I kind of enjoy the B&W versions. There are times where you can lose some depth, etc but I think as a whole it makes the actual art look better.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
DC has its Chronicles series in color but that starts from the very beginning so Showcase-era stories might be a ways away. Both Marvel and DC do color TPBs that are cheaper than Masterworks/Archives, but they're not as systematic so you have to research or know what you're looking for. I'm thinking of stuff like The Avengers: The Serpent Crown and the '70s Captain America stuff.

Showcase:Booster Gold would disagree with you there.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
Cool that Showcase is getting to the GL O'Neill-Adams era, though I'm sure most people have those in TPB already.

Re: DC Showcase/Marvel Essentials?
The Dark Horse AVP omnibus series (two volumes, I believe) are in full color, though at a slightly reduced size.
