Reading PREACHER for the first time

So I'm finally reading Preacher for the first time, I hope it lives up to the hype of being one of the best series ever published. I'm hoping we can have a discussion about this series but with No Spoilers Please. I'm a pretty slow reader especially during the weekdays when I can only average 1-2 issues a day. I'm a bit surprised that it takes me 2-3 times more longer to read an issue as compared to modern comics today which you can easily finish in 5-7 minutes. I'm loving what I have read so far, hopefully the momentum continues as most series I've read start out great but then eventually loses steam and becomes a shell of its former self.

Here's what I've read so far (with my rating of the arc):

Gone to Texas (Intro Arc) #1-4: B
Naked City (NYC & Serial Killer) #5-7: B+
All in the Family (vs. Grandma) #8-12: A+

Absolutely loved the All in the Family arc, what a horrifying punishment Jesse Custer had to endure as a boy. Loved the characters Jody, T.C., and Billy Bob as well. I have to dig in my long boxes but didn't Ennis do Punisher after this and had him battling a Grandma character as well in his first arc (Welcome Bank Frank)?

Is All In The Family the one where Jesse tells someone to

Spoiler:
Go fuck themselves?

Because, if so, that's one of my favorite comic book moments ever.

Also, I want a lighter that says "Fuck Communism."

My favorite quote:
Spoiler:
Son of God, or Son of Man, you can't fuck your sister and expect much good to come out of it.

Second favorite quote: [paraphrased]
Spoiler:
Can't believe I'm goin' down the highway doin' 90 with a fat guy with his dick out on the roof of my car.

Favorite quote requiring context:
Spoiler:
But... you're a MAN!

I've been meaning to do this for years. Read the first couple issues and loved it, decided to wait until the series was over. All the trades just sitting there beckoning me.....

One of my favs of all time. I've had the tpbs for years, but I'm considering trading them for the new deluxe hardcovers that are coming out now.

Great series. Been quite a few years since I read it -- I should make time for a reread.

I read the first 4 issues a few years ago and decided I had to get the entire series. Did that, but have yet to get around to them. This may be the incentive to jump on it since it'll be cool having a thread discussion going on too. Yay.

This was the only comic series I can remember really looking forward to coming out each month! I'm happy they're finally releasing it in hardcover format.

Vastly overrated series, mainly because Ennis kept on pushing the envelope as far as shit/piss/fart jokes go to see when Karen berger would lay down the law and sadly she never did. If she had the series would have been much, much better, but as I said above it degenrated into one huge boring shit/piss/fart/puke joke.

And of course since Ennis got away with it with Preacher he was allowed to do the same thing with every other title he's worked on.

Suprmallet - no, that was in the 1st arc. Issue #3 or #4 I believe.

The hardcover format that they are releasing this on is NOT the same format as the Y The Last Man or Fables Deluxe Format. It is not oversized, the book is regular sized.

Bronkster/Trevor/JasonF - c'mon start reading so we can have a discussion.

Preacher is one of my favorite monthly series ever. I really am disappointed with The Boys though. Ennis has gotten so carried away with the excess and gratuity it becomes a chore to read.

The only thing he wasn't allowed to do was to use the word "****", and obviously couldn't show full-frontal genitals - but pretty much everything else was allowed.

There are aspects of Preacher that just velt vulgar to be vulgar that I didn't care for, but the overall story is still quality IMHO.

Re: Reading PREACHER for the first time

I liked the vulgarity of Preacher. It made the series raw and helped ground the book into a dirty reality of debauchery and violence. I mean how many people blinked at there being a vampire in the book? Angels, demons, vengeance ghosts? He just sewed then into a book where they all made sense. I wouldn't even classify it as a horror series despite the fact that most of the plot hovered in the supernatural realm.

While it's not the ride that Y: the Last Man was, I still rate it quite high on my all-time list.

I need to finish reading Y. I read the first seven books then stopped buying.

I have all of Preacher and have to say it's probably the best comic story I've ever read. I recommend the book Ancient History be read as part of the storylines. It falls after book three, but is a standalone book about supporting characters. If nothing else worth the read for the background it gives you on Saint of Killers.

One of my buddies gave all his groomsman just that. It's awesome.

I envy you first time readers of this story - this and transmetropoltian were books I raced to read once every month on Wednesday.

If memory serves me it was the third Wednesday of every month.

Not to mention, getting to read it without having to wait a month for the next issue like I did!

Re: Reading PREACHER for the first time

The plot always reminded me of Faust with the way the Angels looked (or maybe Vigil to be specific).

I picked up the Book 1 hardcover last month. Never read it and I was just looking for a good read. Wow, All in the Family has leaped to one of my all time favorite stories. I plan on picking up Book 2 next week. Without being specific, does the series stay at about the same level or is there a drop off?

slop101 10-06-10 12:30 AM

Re: Reading PREACHER for the first time

Drop offs usually happen here and there, but they don't last longer than an issue or two - it's only when Ennis feels like going off on a tangent, and even those aren't too bad. It's pretty consistent.
