Grew up looking at and emulating covers of Conan. Frazetta definitely influenced me as a high school kid wanting to draw.

Couldnt resist. For those interested in the doc, get the Fire & Ice DVD, it contains the "Painting with Fire" as a bonus disc and it has commentary and all.

I respect how after his stroke he taught himself to still paint but with his opposite hand. Thats talent.

Saw the obit in the paper this morning... very sad. I've always admired his work and had a friend growing up that was a Frazetta freak. Back in the early '70s at one of the first San Diego Cons, he wanted to by a doodle (I think it was on a napkin or something) that Frazetta had done. But the asking price was like 40 bucks or something, which, back then was quite a bit of cash! I dunno if my friend ever got a Frazetta piece or not ..

I first saw his stuff on the Lancer Conan books in the 70s. What a great artist. And it is a shame what his son is doing.

I was just thinking about Frank Frazetta's art the other day (5/11) and thought he had died years ago. When i googled it i found out he died the day before. I liked his work on the Buck Rogers covers.

There is some contention around all those events. Plenty of conflicting reports out there. When Franks wife Ellie passed away last year the problems seem to have started. The reason Frank kept as much of his work as he did is likely due to his wife. Almost as soon as she was gone, one of the paintings was sold (to Kirk Hammett of Metalica for a cool million). Ellie would have vetoed that, and Frank Sr is reported to only have gone along with the sale only to have peace in the house. Who was for the sale and who was against amongst the children I don't know, but I think knowing who was who would shed a lot of light on Frank Jr.s actions.

BTW, his 'partner in crime' in that story is the guy who puts on the Chiller Theater conventions. He was also a good friend of the Frazetta family.

When I first heard about the break-in I took it at face value. I did a little research and that's when I found out Ellie had passed away earlier last year. That colored the whole story differently because I know how possessive she was towards Franks work. I got the chance to visit the museum about 10 years ago, and along with another artist friend and his wife, we were the only ones there the whole afternoon. Ellie gave us a wonderful guided tour. I left that day with not only a new appreciation of his oil work (which I had never liked as much as his pen and ink stuff) but the clear impression that the museum was her baby. I didn't get the feeling that she was doing it so much for the revenue (I would be surprised if they cleared much more than operating costs each year), as for the pride of seeing the work displayed and appreciated.
I would be surprised if all the kids shared and were motivated by that same pride- when it's evident just how desirable and valuable this work is. When you have an estate worth tens of millions of dollars, and four siblings, it's not all that surprising there are going to be conflicts.

I did not know he was dead, as a kid that sold comics (I was 12 and it was my 1st business). I met him and his wife. Nice people, I have alots of his work. Not forsale, still sad to see.

PHILADELPHIA - A 1971 painting by fantasy artist Frank Frazetta has sold for $1.5 million, two months after the Pennsylvania artist's death.

Frazetta's managers said this week that a private collector bought "Conan the Destroyer" from a family trust. Managers Robert Pistella and Stephen Ferzoco call it the price the highest ever for a work by Frazetta.

The illustrator died in Florida in May at age 82. His iconic illustrations of Conan the Barbarian, Tarzan and other characters often graced comic books, album covers and movie posters.

In recent years, his children have fought over an estate estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars.

The feud boiled over in December when Frank Frazetta Jr. used a backhoe to try to break into the artist's museum in the Pocono Mountains.
