"S&M Barbie lashed by public" (Barbie as Black Canary)

Wow, just wow. An "S&M Costume"? I suppose but still...

The Sun article

BARBIE’S new S&M look has whipped up a storm – with protesters dubbing it “filth”.

The doll’s image is transformed with kinky fishnets, motorcycle jacket, black gloves and boots.

Makers Mattel say Black Canary Barbie, out in September, is based on a DC comic superhero of the same name.

But religious group Christian Voice said: “Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far.

A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”

I don't much care about dolls, but fuck the Christian Voice.

Giantrobo 07-17-08 09:12 AM

If they think the Barbie as Black Canary is too sexy, they should see the Manga versions of the DC girls.

slop101 07-17-08 10:14 AM

Hey "Christian Voice", if you don't like it, don't buy it for your kids - problem solved! I swear, what a bunch of fuckin' whiners.

slop101 07-17-08 10:18 AM

Oh, and

Not to defend these guys, but the Barbie one, is basically a kid's toy (and a girl's toy at that), presumably available at toy stores, and those ani-comi versions are (vastly overpriced) collectors items, available pretty much only at comic book stores and the like.

However, are there no Bratz toys in the UK or something?

I could see how someone unfamiliar with the character would take offense... it doesn't really look like a superhero costume, does it? Shouldn't be banned or anything, though.

Nope. Sorry. This is the same as saying comic books are for kids and need to be appropriately sanitized. Then cartoons. Goodbye Simpsons. And Family Guy. And Anime. Why stop there? TV shows are for kids too. And movies. What the fuck, take all those sculptures out of the museums, kids go there!

It's not the same. I'm not saying that they can't make a doll like this because all dolls are for kids. I'm saying that Barbie is marketed as a kid's toy, even though there are adult collectors out there. Of course, Mattel already made such things as a Baywatch Barbie, so what do I know?

I have no idea what the history is with this toy... if it was supposed to be sold as some collector's item or something, that's one thing. If it was going to be sold at TRU right next to the rest of the Barbie aisle, I can see where the complaints are coming from. I may not necessarily agree with them, especially knowing who the character is, but I can see why people would be offended.

Its part of the 2008 Barbie Collectors line

Right. Here's the 2008 Collector's Line. It's funny that they didn't say anything about the Wonder Woman Barbie. I mean we all know what WW wears which is next to nothing...Hell, Black Canary actually has more on if you count her gloves, jacket, and fishnets.

fujishig 07-18-08 06:08 PM

Weird, I can't click on the black canary one... did they already act?

I'd think the catwoman Kelly doll would also be a bit disturbing...

devilshalo 07-18-08 06:27 PM

Liek Catwoman Kelly isn't S&M with the whip and mask?

I don't think it's that bad. Depending on what versions they used, Catwoman or Harley Quinn could be less appropriate towards their target groups.

I'm disappointed that they didn't do Death from Sandman. Of course, doing a perky goth girl isn't Barbie's thing.

boredsilly 07-19-08 09:45 AM

"But...but...think of the children!"

Fuck off. Like slop says, don't like it? Don't buy it. Job done.

I personally can see why someone wouldn't want to buy this for their kid, and I think the entire Bratz line of dolls is pretty disgusting, but I just wouldn't buy those things for my child (if I had a little bastard running around).

Giantrobo 07-19-08 10:07 AM

But see, I don't think these are really targeted to kids. I guess people see "Barbie" and assume it's for kids. But they do that for comic books too and we know better don't we? Anyway, I could be wrong but I think these are for older collectors.

Oh you're right. This is as much for kids as McFarlane figures are. Sure some kids buy it, but it's targeted at collectors. I just mean it's going to be carried in the toy department where people will be shopping for their children, and I can see them not wanting to give this to their child.

Same way I wouldn't have bought one of those McFarlane Twisted Oz figures for a kid either...well not Dorothy, that's for sure.

DeltaSigChi4 07-22-08 11:35 AM

Don't like it, don't buy it.

And piss off.

98% of the public wouldn't have even known this doll existed if the Christian Voice had just kept their mouths closed. That doll is clearly geared for the avid Barbie collector, who's going to be an adult woman who has plenty of money to spend. Most stores wouldn't carry it, anyway. A classic example of being up in arms over nothing.

Kara?

Peep 07-30-08 07:59 PM

Didn't they already make Supergirl, Batgirl and Womder Woman Barbies?
