I'll be there for the MST3K reunion and I have tickets for the riftrax Plan 9 event. Oh yeah, good times.
|
A friend has offered me passes to attend this year, I would be bringing my family 2 boys, 9 & 1, and my wife. Would I be ok walking around with a stroller? Is it at all family friendly? My 9 year old loves star wars and the wife loves anime so I'm sure they'll find something interesting there. I'm interested in meeting an artist in the alley how does that work?

Honestly, strollers can be a pain. Especially if it's one of the large models. The floor is VERY crowded. Some aisles aren't very wide and that always poses issues with strollers and wheelchairs. You have to remember most people will also be carrying large bags, backpacks and rolled posters. Have lots of patience and don't be in a hurry. People don't know how insane it is until they actually attend.
There will be instances of being non-family friendliness. Be careful of aisles toward the back north end (aisles 200-600 or so). That is where they'll put the Playboy/Suicide Girls/adult comics...etc. But that doesn't mean other less family-friendly stuff insn't sprinkled throughout the floor. Some of the "booth babes" will dress provocatively. Some attendees will dress provocatively (some of the more extreme will not be allowed in but once in they'll adjust their clothing). Just be aware and be ready. Sunday is family day, so it's more family friendly. It's also the least crowded day. Not to say it won't be crowded... just the least of the 4 days. Artist Alley is set up as long rows of tables with the artist sitting behind the table. They will have name placards so you'll know where to find your favorite. You just walk up to them, look at their work and chat with them. They're there to meet the fans. Sometimes they'll even do a sketch for you. If you buy one of their comics, they will also sign it. At least in my experience they have. Some will also have original artwork to sell. |
Going as a 1st-timer this year, and have a press credential to boot. So, in case anyone is interested in my extra 4-day pass...
|
Friday is now sold out. That leaves only Thurs and Sunday open.
There are listings in the local craigslist out here if you wanted to contact them to transfer the pass. I think there's only a few days left to do a transfer with CCI. I'm not sure about onsite transfers. I guess you could always pick up your badge and give it to them but your name will be on their badge. |
San Diego Comic Con 2008
Ok, so it's been more about movies in the past few years and with the steady stream of comic book properties becoming movies. I figure this is as good a place to start a comic con thread (instead of it being glossed over in Other or Book Talk).
The problem with Comic Con.. most of this year's summer movies have come out and that leave remaining and future films to showcase something. What's really interesting with this year's San Diego Comic Con (which is July 24 - 27) is that 4 day passes, Friday and Saturday passes are sold out WITHOUT A PROGRAMMING SCHEDULE! I guess that just shows how big it has become. So I'm here to talk about what you want to see from the studios. As well as getting this updated with who's attending and programming info as it comes. My guesses: Paramount Transformers 2 Star Trek Warner Bros Star Wars: The Clone Wars Watchmen Sony Quantum of Solace Pineapple Express Green Hornet(?) Universal The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emporer Fast and the Furious 4 (?) Those are just off the top of my head... Discuss... |
Add
Dreamworks: Tropic Thunder Lionsgate: Punisher Fox: Wolverine Origins Paramount said they were not going to have a major presence at this years con, then changed their tune: http://io9.com/5019997/some-notable-...s-at-comic+con |
Don't forget about the possible teaser for Friday the 13th Platinum Dunes may be showing. I'm not going, but I'd love to see that.

Yo joe

Lionsgate: The Spirit
I'll be covering Comic Con for DVD Talk. Will be there for all four days. Hope to see some of you there! |
Debated going this year but gas is just to damn expensive for a 5 hour road trip. Oh well.
|
Paramount will not have a panel. That's no Gi joe, transformers, and Star trek?

What's everyone doing for lodging? I'm looking for room deals for the three days.
|
Got myself hooked up to a hotel really close to the con myself.
I'll be there four days, not sure about preview night as it seems to be ever so pointless these days. The lack of Hall H material may make Ballroom 20 even tougher to get into this year as TV at least has something to offer in Heroes and BSG already in the can. Also really pleased to have tickets to the Riftrax event and really looking forward to the MST3K reunion. They really need to bust out a program already. |

I think Sony will debut some some Underworld 3 pictures.

My friend who told us he was planning on attending just told me that he forgot to register (kept putting it off), and of course the 4-day and Friday and Saturday passes are all sold out!! He's really bummed. I keep reminding everyone not to wait until the last minute to register. Oh well.

I agree that people shouldn't wait till the last minute, but the 4-days sold out two months before. Don't they usually start selling out the week or two before? They need to find a better system, cause next year the scalpers are going to be even more ruthless. |
Here's a sneak peek at Thursday's programming. It was posted on the site but taken down shortly afterwards due to the possibility of the SAG strike. So, take this schedule as preliminary and subject to change:
Thursday, July 24 I edited this post to remove the schedule, due to Thursday Programming officially posted on their site. |
So the possibility of the SAG strike is what's holding up programming info? That the actors might not show up?
|
I'll be there producing coverage for mtv. This'll be my fifth year going so it's pretty exciting; gets bigger every year. Hopefully I'll be doing more comic book coverage as well.

The plot thickens... now the rumor is they pulled the schedules due to still being work done. Here is a link to the pdf's of both Thurs and Friday. As you can see, some of the entries really are incomplete. Again, this might not be the finalized schedule but you'll get an idea of what's coming up.
