Best local comics?
 

I was wondering what some of you recommended for the best local talent in your area? Who's putting out great comics that deserves better attention?

I found one yesterday that I rather liked. It's an anthology, so the material isn't always consistent, but it's probably one of the better local comics I've seen come out:

Ok I'll bite... how do you find local comics? Ashcans that the distribute to local comic stores?

I remember listening to a podcast about how expensive it was to solicit and distribute through Diamond, saying that it was almost certainly a money losing scenario for most startups... and why don't they just setup something on the net, where it's free but at least they're not losing money. Any online "local" comics like that that anyone can recommend?

Not sure if anyone's heard of it, but a guy in my neighborhood is Phil Foglio, who does Girl Genius and some others.

Uhhhh...go to your local comic book store? And if you live in or near a metro area, there is probably an online community of local comic book artists online already. There is in Kansas City, and this town is certainly not the best place to find comic books, but they are out there.

Oh, I see...you're not interested in doing that. You want comics for free.

And silly me here wanting to support local artists.

And call me old fashioned...but I like having an actual comic book to read and enjoy. Online comics can only do so much for me, and it's not much.

Hey, don't attack me... I'm not looking for comics for free, if you read my post I mentioned that usually artists lose money self-publishing, and that a way to get their work noticed is to post it online. Besides, if a comic is local to, say, Kansas City, how else am I supposed to check it out?

I live in Los Angeles and have visited quite a few comic book stores in the area, and I can't remember ever seeing "local" comics, which is why I asked. You were talking about more indy talent, right, as opposed to professional artists who happen to live in the area?

I didn't understand the original post either. My local store carries hundreds of titles, but I've never seen anything "local." In fact I've been collecting for more than 20 years and have only seen a "local" book once on the shelves. It sucked. I can say that because I bought it.

I wasn't meaning to come off as attacking anybody. I personally don't get much satisfaction out of online comics. I got into one (Inverloch) but I opted to buy the volumes available on amazon.com over reading it online. One of my pet peeves in trying to find new talent is that it's often online. I guess I am an old fogy for liking "floppies."

I suggested some local online forums not to read comics online but maybe because local comic artists would post on there what stores carried their stuff. There are only a couple shops in my area that seem to be willing to support local self made comics.

It's a shame more comic books don't carry local comics. I know there are people out there putting them out...either self produced mini comics or full fledged regular sized comic books. And not all of them suck...I've gotten some mini comics in the mail via trades that are really, extremely well done, as well as some self produced small press comics.

And I wasn't curious if you knew of anything around where I live. I was curious if you knew of anything where you live! And most people selling comics online offer them for sale through Pay Pal. (that is if something was recommended here and somebody who didn't live in that area wanted to buy the comic.)
