Five Below has a new section called Five Beyond where they sell stuff above $5. In that area I found this chase blacklight Galactus Funko Pop for $29.99. At one point, this chase figure was selling for over $100

I remember buying those cards back in the day. I have no idea how Marvel duped me into buying comic book cards in the first place.

They did have some nice art by Jim Lee. I find the card sets that featured a single artist (or duo) to be really nice collectibles.

The only Marvel card sets I have are X-Men I by Jim Lee, Marvel Masterpieces I by Joke Jusko, and Marvel Masterpieces III by the Hildebrandts. And I'm still kicking myself for not buying Series V (Boris & Julie) when I had the chance.

As a lifelong collector, I’ve dabbled in trading cards a few times. Hopefully I’m forever done with them now, but in the past, when the bug hit, it was all or nothing. Last time with cards was that boom around 1990, and I bought so much darn product. Probably have 15-20 banker’s boxes full of largely unopened packs and boxes, mostly baseball and comic cards.

It’s all worthless now, last I checked. Someday maybe I’ll go thru a box at a time, having fun sorting them and keeping a handful then gifting them all to a kid.

You might want to do some research on what you have.

Recently, there's been a huge uptick in interest in sports cards. Certain cards and unopened boxes can be quite valuable.

I don't think non-sports cards have had the same kind of renaissance, but I've noticed that they've crept up in price on eBay. I went on a buying binge about ten years ago, buying up a lot of complete sets/chase cards of sets I always wanted but didn't have the money to buy back when I was in high school and college, and complete sets of fantasy art cards (Boris, Olivia, Frazetta, Jeff Jones, etc) and their chase cards could be purchased dirt cheap. The prices on those have gone up some in the past couple of years, but not astronomically.

One set, the 1996 Marvel Masterpieces V with art by Boris and Julie that I mentioned in my post above, is crazy valuable. A complete set of base cards sells for thousands of dollars.

Thanks Josh, I’ll definitely check values before opening anything. Of course, it’s very likely they stay in storage a few more decades and my widow gets to deal with them.

People may want to check their clearance aisles at Wal-Mart. Just found the McFarlane Super Powers Darkseid, Batman and Superman for $4 each. Heard some stores are clearing them out at $2.47 each

Target has a B2G1 going that includes books. I just picked up The Amazing Spider-Man by Nick Spencer Vol. 1 Omnibus, The Thing Omnibus and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Compendium Vol. 1, they were 84.99 each so 56.66 after the deal! Not bad considering the cover price of the omnis were 125 and the TMNT was 150!

Since I'm sure you did your homework, what's the difference between the TMNT compendium (I didn't see a companion) and the smaller Ultimate collections besides size?

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals

I've ordered larger omnibuses before from the Target sale and my experience was hit or miss. Expect Amazon-quality packaging, which most comic fans know isn't great. But a great deal if everything arrives in decent shape.

I haven't seen the book myself, but I believe the compendiums are meant to collect the entire Mirage run, including spinoff series, in black and white. The ultimate b/w collections only collected the issues that had Eastman/Laird participation. The non-Eastman/Laird issues were only ever collected separately in colorized form.

That said, there are still a handful of issues from other creators that they don't have the reprint rights to. Issue #8, the Cerebus issue, isn't included in compendium v.1 even though it was included in the ultimate collection. Dave Sim has the rights to that issue and is doing some sort of Kickstarter remaster for it. I don't know if that's specifically why it's not being included, but either way it's not there.

Re: Comic Book Bargains & Hot Deals

I know this is off-topic, but I just received the Compendium and wanted to properly answer fujishig's question

Positives of the Compendium
  • Includes Fugitoid #1, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1-5 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #13, which aren't included in the Ultimate Collections
  • Has a built-in ribbon bookmark
Negatives
  • Pages are smaller (UC: 8.5x12, Comp: 7x10.75)
  • Doesn't include Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #8, or any of the era-appropriate short stories from UC 6 except D'ants Fever (also, D'ants Fever is in black-and-white like in UC 6, even though it was originally published in color)
  • Does not include any bonus material, whereas the UCs had annotations for every story by Eastman and Laird
In the end, I'm a bit dissapointed. I should have done a little more research before-hand, I just got excited when I saw it included stuff not in the UCs. Unforunately, this ends up being a supplement to my UCs rather than a replacement. I essentially paid $56 for 7 issues.

InstockTrades has a few screaming deals on omnibuses, crazy prices.

DC:

Who's Who Omnibus Volume 1 ($30!) - If you have any interest whatsoever in Bronze Age and Copper Age DC Comics, this mid-80s series is a real blast of nostalgia. This is a $150 list book, I paid far more than $30 for it. At this price I'm thinking of buying a second copy, lol.

Legion of Super-Heroes: 5 Years Later Omnibus Volume 2 ($45)

Marvel:

Excalibur Omnibus Volume 2 ($25)

Fantastic Four Omnibus Volume 3 ($31.25) - This is the original Kirby/Lee run.

Amazon seems to be running a few nice prices on large hardcovers/omnibuses this week, possibly beginning their upcoming Prime sale. There are also several books with coupons attached to them, I believe matching the Target sale.

Batman: No Man's Land Vol 1 Omnibus for 50% off at $63:
Now this price is exclusive to Prime members - Dan Slott's She Hulk Omnibus for $43.
Tom King's Batman/Catwoman Hardcover for $17
Avengers Vs X-Men Omnibus (1700 pages!) for $56

Nice! I found a few more, all listed as a Limited Time Deal
  • The Best Marvel Stories by Stan Lee Omnibus $43.85 (56% off)
  • Captain Marvel by Kelly Sue DeConnick Omnibus $62.10 (50% off)
  • Black Panther by Ta-Nehisi Coates Omnibus $53.89 (57% off)

Thanks for the post. The two I wanted are still regular price but that is likely because they are newer releases: The Fantastic Worlds of Frank Franzetta and Marvel Comics Library: Spider-Man Volume 2.

Hopefully next time!

Great deals on several of those though. I have the History Of EC Comics release and that is a steal for $100. I also highly recommend the XXL Star Wars Archives release for 100 bucks. The large size is fantastic for looking at all the photographs.

I would love to own that Rocky movies book but $2000 is a bit whack.

FYI, they dropped the Frazetta book to $99 today.

Great! Thanks. Gonna pick it up. Wonder what they mean by "display copies?" Are they still like new?

According to this, it sounds like they label certain items as "display copies" if they don't want to accept returns on them. I guess it's like they're listing them as being in potentially less-than-pristine condition so they can't be returned for damage in shipping or being in not like-new condition.

Have like 5 in my cart, but have no space and a backlog of thousands, so maybe I’ll be able to resist.
