King's Dark Tower #1 is out! YES!

Well tomorrow is the day for Dark Tower #1 comic to come out! Anyone pick up Marvel Spotlight: Dark Tower last week? Decent book with some great info on the book series..I strongly feel DT #1 will sell out quickly tomorrow at LCS, alot of King fans will be coming over to the dark side to pick up a copy or two! The Variant covers are very expensive on Ebay already..

JasonF 02-06-07 10:53 AM

Some places are opening at midnight tonight to sell it, so if you're really that excited ...

Nope, no LCS in this area opening at midnight...I thought LCS get their new books on Wednesday? Marvel shipping Dark Tower early?

Wildo1966 02-07-07 08:25 AM

Did anyone go to the midnight release at certain comic shops? I see alot of signed copies on ebay from a signing in NY last night with Lee and David...

Michael Corvin 02-07-07 12:39 PM

Picked up a copy today. I asked about the alternate covers. I was dismayed to find out the comic shop I went to hawks all their limited shit on ebay. Then proceeded to give me a business card on it with their ebay store name. :wtf: Is this common? I haven't been to a comic shop regularly in years.

Kinda fishy if you ask me.

I also stopped in Borders and they did not receive anything.

Out of curiosity why is this fishy to you? They're a business and can make a lot of scratch auctioning any limited edition items on eBay. My local shop sells things on eBay all the time. They even display the stuff that's up for auction at their main location. No sweat off my back.

Wildo1966 02-07-07 01:05 PM

My LCS always gets a premium for the variant covers, this is quite common all over. The more copies the store buys the more variants they get. My local shop will probably have 100 copies of Dark Tower #1, so in reality they will receive 4 of the 1/25 variant covers and 1 of the 1/75 variant covers. They pay the same for them as the regular issues so they make a nice profit on the variants. IMO you should not get pissed with your local shop, just check Ebay and see how many are there now!

Here is some news from one shop.

Michael Corvin 02-07-07 03:39 PM

I understand they can make money off it, that is a no brainer. I'm just looking at it from a toy, dvd, game, book, hell any other market where the consumer actually has a shot at finding a limited copy or variant of something on the shelf for SRP. The regular consumer never has a shot.

 No sweat off my back, I was just curious if it was commonplace and accepted in this market.

To be fare, I'm pretty sure my LCS does actually put some of those in the subscription bags. When they are filling them up whoever is up when the variant comes to the top of the stack gets it.
But, no, the regular consumer rarely has a shot at anything really worth money. But, oh well.

My LCS had a midnight opening, but I was just too damn tired to go last night. I did end up picking up a copy today and just finished it a few minutes ago. I am a huge DT fan from way back, so I was very much looking forward to this. My only reservation was that Peter David was credited with the scripts. Now, I'm not really a fan of Peter David's work. I read a bit of his run on Hulk back in the early 90's and wasn't impressed, and just about everything else he's done since hasn't interested me in the least.

That being said, I thought this first issue of the series was spectacular. The artwork was just stunning - the best work I've ever seen from Jae Lee, and the best artwork I've seen in a very long time. I found myself just staring at the panels and picking out little details. Hell, I've got the issue right next to me and I'm still glancing at it every so often. The script that Peter David wrote is wonderful - very much in the style of the King himself, and I mean that in the best possible way. I so cannot wait for the next issue to hit the stands. If anyone on this board is waiting for the trade, I advise you to forego that and just pick up the monthly titles - it's worth the money.

Personally I hope this redeems the who DT series for me. Like PalmerJoss I am a fan from way back. I first heard about the first book in 1985 and learned I couldnt get it readily at a bookstore. In 1987 I read a Douglas Winter King book that had a synopsis of the Gunslinger. Then I found a few of the first stories on micro fiche at the library. And in 1988 I saved my lawn mowing money to get the DT 2 Limited Hardcover that summer to go with the Stephen King read audio book of The Gunslinger..

Honestly I loved the series - up until the last 3 books. Then I felt they were so mediocre. Parts I enjoyed, but it wasnt where I thought it would go. I think it suffers from the same issues the Star Wars prequels did. So much time passed from the original that it was bound to disapoint.

So this comic series I hope will redeem the series. I hope for somthing a little different than what we got in the novels. Sounds like that will be the case to some extent.

Question:

I'm just finishing up the first book in the series, should I wait until I've finished reading the rest of the books before reading the comics? Or is this just a side story?

You should probably wait until you've read book four, "Wizard and Glass," since it appears that the comics covers/adapts events from that novel.

Actually, there's a post on Millarworld where someone said that the comic series will run thirty issues (four miniseries?) and that the first miniseries would adapt things from "Wizard and Glass" and the rest of the comics would be original material and serve as a prequel to the first novel, "The Dark Tower: Gunslinger." Thread here.

The events in the first comic, from "Wizard and Glass," are flashbacks to events before the main narrative began in the first book.

Thanks.

neocheddar02 02-11-07 10:55 PM

Wow, I've been waiting for this for awhile and then completely forgot about it. I'm off to Borders!

Edit: Have you seen the prices the variant cover is going for on Ebay? It's ridiculous, it only came out a few days ago!

MBoyd 02-12-07 09:27 AM

There are two variant covers. I picked up the more common one (1:20?) for $20. What's that one going for on ebay? I might put it up. Never underestimate the deep pockets of Stephen King completists.

neocheddar02 02-12-07 08:57 PM

It's going for between $30 and $50-ish I think.

Wildo1966 02-13-07 05:45 AM

The 1/25 Variant is going for about $30-35 these days, the 1/75 Variant is close to $100....

Michael Corvin 02-13-07 07:23 AM

"these days?" It's been a week.

Geofferson 02-13-07 10:20 AM

There are 7 of these total, right? I'm assuming they come out monthly?

I was out of town last week, so wasn't able to pick this up...hopefully my LCS will get more copies in this week.

MBoyd 02-13-07 12:54 PM

I ordered this from DCBS @ .99 but I was surprised to see it at my local comic shop for $1. Never have a seen a shop do pricing like that.

Fincher Fan 02-14-07 11:44 AM

As someone unfamiliar with the novels, I enjoyed the comic. Considering this is Marvel, however, are we going to start a pool as to how late it will start running?

Not sure about it running late, but you can bet we'll have a multitude of other connected books that will milk this one 'til the money is dry. Sketch books, director's cuts, character files, etc.

Geofferson 02-14-07 02:57 PM

I followed up with my LCS and was told they aren't getting any more copies.

Is eBay the next option?
