Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I thought the trust angle was interesting, but it was more the "Hey, there's an idyllic community out here... Wait, it's not all it seems!" theme that felt a little tired. I do realize that it's kind of a natural problem when you're working with this premise.

Thinking about who might die in #100 scares me.

As long as Glen survives I'll be happy. I'm still pissed about Abraham. Between that and Mad Men, it was not a good week for my favorite characters!

I'm counting down! 4 Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga is the closest store to me that's doing a midnight release. I'll be there with zombie ears on.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

It's weird, I'd figure by now there would be tons of places with spoilers, but I can't find one. I get my books through DSCB and I won't get my copy until around August 9. Boo...

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Spoiler:
I would have much prefered to see them kill Maggie and see how Glenn reacts to that, than this. Sometimes I wonder if Kirkman sacrifices storytelling for shock value too much.

Pretty shocking issue, but it certainly didn't feel like a double.

I think it was only ten pages longer than usual.

Jesus fuck, that was messed up.

Really glad I didn't read the spoiler link before I got the issue.

Here's to hoping that
Spoiler:
Maggie rams Lucille up Negan's ass in the very near future.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I liked when Negan started threatening Rick sexually, but Kirkman would never have the balls to actually do that to even a minor character, let alone Rick.

These 'shocking' deaths have started to bore, since we know that's as far as this series will ever go.

I know they didn't show it, but I was pretty sure that Michonne was sexually abused by the Governor's men...

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

That was it? Seriously? I didn't even care at this point. They telegraphed that one pretty far in advance. The moment the character started going on about the pregnancy they may have just put on a red shirt and stated that they're only two days away from retirement.

Issue 50, where they went through and skimmed the cast by more than half was way more shocking than this.

Meh, maybe I just don't care, especially since that character hasn't done much in a while for me to care about them.

Actually, nothing really shocking happened in 50. It was issues 44-48 where all the big stuff happened.

I thought Kirkman did a pretty good job of setting it up so that you knew either Michone, Glen or Andrea would die. All of them had moments/lines that could have forecast their death. And the shock clearly wasn't meant to just be the who, but the how.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

Either way, I felt more when Lori got gat than who got it. I definitely saw Kirkman's writing process in Negan.

wash rinse repeat. To be honest, he wasted a good opportunity to turn the victim here into something more than he was. But sure enough, Kirkman just feels like it's going through the motion.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

To be honest the thing that shocked me the most was that
Spoiler:
Carl actually cried while Glen was murdered. I'd thought that little fuck was a certified psycho by now.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

I think the last few dozen issues have definitely been stale; at this point, its really move to a new place, find bad people, kill a character or two, and then repeat.

Re: The Walking Dead (and other zombie discussion)

You guys are funny. Half saying the death was too predicable because it was one of the 3 that was foreshadowed, the other half was bored because because it was typically "shocking" as if that makes some sense.

I agree that the death was foreshadowed, but it was clearly by design to generate tension by offering several options as well as the enie-meanie-minie-moe bit. Kirkman's trademark "shock" death was actually an issue or two back with the whole arrow-through-the-head. This was a bit different.

I also don't quite get the whole Negan = Governor complaint. They are about as similar to each other in the same way all bad guys are similar to each other in any entertainment form. Negan runs a marauding band right out of Seven Samurai is very different to someone operating a city. The Governor was bat-shit crazy complete with a gladiator pit, a wall of heads, and a zombie-kid he was making out with. Negan appears to be very calculated so far closer to a Al Capone-like character who figured out the best way to run a Genghis Khan style campaign.

I thought this issue was great and I can't wait to see how Rick begins his revenge plot. My only complaint is over my fear that we'll get a post-prison styled depression from Rick where he goes a bit nuts and we will have to read 50 pages of him revealing insecurities to Andrea and her having to give him pep talks about how they all "need him" to be strong.

What I want is Rick climbing into a tree with grenade arrows like in Rambo II and fucking shit up. I want sudden and decisive retribution. I'd settle for some slower Edmond Dantes plotting, but I want there to be fireworks in the end.
