So Marvel FINALLY reprinted silver age X-Men vol.1 thirteen years after it first published. I have been collecting X-Men omnibuses since about 2011 (when vol.1 was already out of print and very expensive) and have every single volume released through Age of Apocalypse. I was so excited to finally complete the set and I got the book only to discover that Marvel changed the spine art on its omnibuses.

I'm not one of these super anal types who will refuse to buy a book because the spine doesn't match, but I'm pretty sure just about every X-Men omnibus has been reprinted at least once (and in some cases more than once) in the 11 years I've been waiting for this particular book. It just feels like a giant kick in the crotch from Marvel. I get it when they change the paper or the binding or when they switched from cloth covers to laminated covers. I may not always like it, but I understand the economic realities of the business. However, changing the spine art doesn't save them money, and these books rarely make it to bookstores, so shelf appeal isn't really a concern either. I don't get it. Why rock the boat?

I still have the original printing...sealed in plastic. Never got around to opening it, lol. Like you, I loathe how both Marvel and DC love changing the trade dress on reprints unless something has been altered or corrected.

The annoying thing is that Marvel hasn't changed the trade dress on the omnibuses in 16 years! I mean sure, if they felt like they needed to change them then they had to start somewhere, but if this book (the only old reprint I needed!) had just come out a month or two ago, it would match all my others. Ugh. Of course there's still Uncanny vol. 5 and maybe one other book at some point down the road to finish off the 80's X-Men, so maybe I will have a couple more to match it someday.

*Edit* Apparently this change started last spring with Defenders vol.1, but for some reason the Wolverine vol.2 book that I bought in August had the old spine art. Stupid.

I'm in the process of moving. I've really slowed down by omnibus buying in the past 6 or so years but even so, it's so painful. Thinking of getting rid of a bunch of my non omnibus tpbs, especially ones like the Byrne visionaries that I have in omnibus form, but other than giving it away or pulping them I have no idea what to do. Do libraries take this stuff?

When I pared down my collection I sold the ones that still had some value on eBay and donated the rest to Goodwill.

They retain their value pretty well - you should be able to get around double cover-price for out of print ones, and not too far below cover for those still in print, depending on condition.

I was complaining before about the Spider-Man omnibuses not truly going through and including all appearances or hoping they would intersect Peter Parker Spectacular and Web Of SM into these but now it appears they are going to at least release them in separate volumes eventually.

PPTSSM Volume 1 Omnibus got announced for a September 27, 2022 release date:

I've already got all 4 Marvel Masterworks of Spectacular Spider-Man. I'm just glad to be able to get this title in HC collections. (Like many other titles, at a certain point in the 80's I don't find the comics as good, so I'd be good with Epic Collections, but for Spectacular that would be AFTER Gerry Conway's run.)

Marvel is now doing their omniboo digitally as well so I’ll probably pick up June 1962 that way. I like the concept but don’t have space for a physical version of a title that’s kind of a novelty,

Ah!
Micronauts Omnibus coming next year.
After not having rights to those characters, this omni is kind of a big deal!

Now that Marvel has ROM's rights for the moment, some are clamoring for them to reprint a couple collected editions for other titles which had to cut out any ROM guest appearances.

I think that would be a bit of a mess, though. Were there any omnibuses that had notable exclusions where it wouldn't just make more sense to include it in the ROM omnibus instead?

I don't think there's been omnis, but I know the second Power Man and Iron Fist epic had to skip 73

I’m in for Micronauts. I remember it being an uneven series back in the day (I was meh about going to regular-size Earth), but I liked a lot of it, and it’s been in limbo for so long.

It might be the rose-colored glasses of nostalgia but I still think the first 12 issues are fantastic. It gets a bit rocky at points afterward, but I still love the series overall. After the first 12 issues of Michael Golden, you get great work by guys like Pat Broderick, Gil Kane, Steve Ditko, Jackson Guice, and Kelly Jones. I have every issue of both the original & New Voyages series but will pick up the Omnibus anyway.

I think being in their own little corner of the Marvel Universe helped them too, it really did feel like Star Wars or some sci-fi epic instead of just tiny heroes in the Marvel Universe (which it became and was where I started to lose interest). I feel the same about Starlin's stuff like Warlock too.

The missing Power Man & Iron Fist issue will be in the Romnibus.

I can dig why folks would want Marvel to reprint omnibuses and Epic collections with skipped issues because rights issues.

Nothing I care about, but it really sucks when you can't have a complete reprint of something because they contain characters the publisher no longer as the rights to.

I'd love to have a nice omnibus collection of Warren Ellis' Stormwatch #37-50, Stormwatch v2 #1-11, WildCATS vs Aliens, and Authority v1 #1-12.

Yeah. They had to do that with the What If omnibuses (omnibi?) because they didn't have the rights to Master Of Kung-Fu issue at the time. At least that was what I read. My minor OCD won't let me buy incomplete collections like that...even if it is just one issue.

It's gotta suck for the people who have already bought the omnibus though. Plus I'd think if you were that anal about it people would be rebuying omnibus's just to have matching covers when they change them (wait do people do that?)

There was a decent bit of discussion for the new DC Versus Marvel Omnibus so I thought I would post the link to this fun article here by DC. It goes through all the DC/Marvel crossovers and gives winners. Spoiler alert - Marvel wins but I will let you read how DC arrived at that surprising decision. This is on the matchups between the heroes in the stories and not a quality of story discussion.

DC vs. Marvel: The Score | DC

And I am posting this cover just because of love the retro look of Steve Rude's art.

I know this is a Marvel Thread but I didn't think we needed a separate DC thread. Maybe a mod can change the title and make it an any company Omnibus thread?

Anyway, I think this was mentioned a while back but can't remember if there was a date. But now we have a release date and I might have to get this even though I have them all digitally:

CheapGraphicNovels.com > WARLORD BY MIKE GRELL OMNIBUS VOL 01 HC (PRE-ORDER COMING SOON!)

Release date 11-25-2025

https://cheapgraphicnovels.com/var/i...1799505525.jpg

This volume collects 1st Issue Special #8, Warlord #1-50, and Amazing World of DC Comics #12.

PhantomStranger 05-05-25 01:01 AM

Re: Upcoming Marvel Omnibus Releases

Pre-orders do matter to Marvel and DC. While I think Warlord is safe, low pre-sales often delay an omnibus' release.

Just a head's up on the Death and Return of Superman omnibus. DC has announced they are putting out several more volumes of the Superman Triangle Years Era omnibus, which will collect everything in the Death and Return of Superman omnibus over volumes 2 & 3.

Only a problem really if your brother plans to collect all the Triangle Years omnibuses.

Can a mod just change this thread to all Omnibus releases instead of just Marvel? Seems silly to create a new thread.

Anyway, I just caught wind of this release and it is a must buy for me. It was basically at the peak of my comic book collecting plus you have John Byrne at the helm when he was at the top of his DC skills...

Re: Upcoming Marvel Omnibus Releases

^ Nice. I’ve had that LEGENDS book in various carts for a while now. I’ve had a paperback edition for years now. I’ve mentioned in a different thread that Perez and Byrne were the two artists who influenced my own love of drawing (alongside other people in my life of course). I never followed characters in all my years of (modest) collecting. I followed them (and dabbled occasionally with books by a few other artists with distinct styles). If they switched from one comic to another, so did I. I have three smaller Byrne Superman hardcovers that came out a few years back, and I bought them figuring that his run would get a more dedicated treatment eventually. As I recall, those other three books have more stories from the various tiles in the line (while this only has MAN OF STEEL 1-6) and therefore stuff by different artists as you get into the second and third volumes (especially Jerry Ordway, who was pretty good himself), but this new book is just the Byrne miniseries. I do wish they’d just do an omnibus of his work on those titles, but I guess that’s a long way off, if ever. Definitely in for this at a good price.

PhantomStranger 02-06-26 05:48 PM

Re: The Upcoming Omnibus Release Thread

Head's up if you only care about the Legends mini-series - it was included last year in Ostrander's Suicide Squad omnibus which can be had under $60. I don't have a problem with Legends though that event omnibus smacks of a book you'll eventually see hovering around $50. The only interesting crossover I see listed is that Cosmic Boy mini. Where is the Baxter Legion omnibus!!!!

My understanding on Man of Steel is it's hitting an Absolute edition first because DC wants to amortize the restoration expenses for Byrne's entire Superman run before issuing them in omnibuses. I'll probably pass on the Absolute and wait for the Byrne omnibus likely coming in 2027/2028. I already own the 4 volume hardcovers.

Re: The Upcoming Omnibus Release Thread

I love Byrne's X-Men and FF but the other stuff is from when I was out of comics.

I did get the Grell Warlord, which is something I've been waiting for a long time. It's light as a feather because of the paper they used, which I'm fine with. I'm less impressed with the tight binding that is not great for two-page spreads and some text.

A couple of weeks back, Hamilton Book sent out an email plugging some upcoming Omnibus editions to their inventory, and it looks like most went up with this week’s new items. I find some of their Omnibus pricing is way too close to retail pricing elsewhere, but many of these new arrivals are priced in the $35 - $65 range (with some still upwards of $90+), which feels more appropriate considering the nature of their business:

Not bad pricing but a newer seller on eBay is carrying many of the same omnibuses for cheaper. Funaticals is a charity out of California who picked up a ton of Marvel stock leftover from Diamond and is selling the overstock at rock-bottom prices. There is no real catch using them as I've ordered like 10 omnibuses from them and received everything in new condition. Some of the prices almost feel like stealing.

Oh I had no idea they were a charity or what the story behind them was (I just knew they were getting stuff dirt cheap). Cool.

I think their stock is coming to an end soon, at least on the omnibus side though.

Supposedly they were the center of heated arguments at Marvel's last retailer meeting - sellers complained Funaticals was selling at prices they couldn't hope to match. I think Funaticals is practically selling omnibuses near their actual cost, somewhat similar to Ollie's.
