May comic book thread

Well . . . nobody else started one.

Free comic Book day is Saturday!

htttp://www.freecomicbookday.com

The titles don't excite me much, but I'll check it out. Hopefully it will bring in some new suckers er . . fans. :)

DGibFen 05-01-06 09:31 PM

2 days til Infinite Crisis is resolved, and then starts 52.

Marvel's Civil War crossover begins this week as well. Should be interesting. Maybe.

kevin75 05-01-06 10:24 PM

dangit. it's almost may 2 and DCBS still doesn't have their new listings up.

Jackskeleton 05-02-06 01:48 AM

And the VS game ruins who's under the mask in the new Flash monthly..

Spoiler:
bart takes over for Wally and has aged a couple of years. Wally has just vanished, though it's assumed he'll be back to take back the role

The full page ad from Virgin Comics in Previews was pretty interesting: "No Crisis. No Civil War"

I'm sure the company name will bring plenty of snickers in the shops. ;)

Hmmmm, Snickers. They really satisfy.

Chew 05-02-06 10:32 AM

I wonder what's causing Fell to be so far behind? #5 is the only book from my November order that still hasn't shipped.

davidh777 05-02-06 12:15 PM

Is Villains United the last of the IC one-offs?

MBoyd 05-02-06 12:38 PM

Yes it is.

The Antipodean 05-02-06 05:45 PM

I'm cautiously psyched about Civil War, but trying not to get my hopes up. Previews have been interesting and McNiven's art is fantastic. But I've been burned a lot by these "events" -- Infinite Crisis started off OK, but has gotten bogged down for me in wayyyy too many tangents and expecting the reader to have an encylopedic knowledge of DC history -- it's no "Crisis on Infinite Earths," that's for sure. And "House of M" just sucked, plain and simple. Bendis cannot write a crossover to save his life.

fujishig 05-02-06 06:54 PM

I know I'm behind, but I just finished reading the second New Avengers hardcover (focusing on Sentry). The first thing that stood out to me was the quick pace of the book, and how quickly I read through the main story. I don't know how people can collect this kind of stuff monthly. In addition, if I hadn't recently read the original Sentry trade, I would've been completely lost. The second was that it was actually shorter than the first volume because it included, at the end, some kind of Marvel Handbook for the 100+ escaped villains... kinda cool, but probably unnecessary considering they're already coming out with the new handbook A-Z.

Now waiting for my monthly shipment to come in this week...

Also, when that comes, it's gonna be Previews time again. Anybody have any recommendations? I'm usually trying to trim down my orders to make it under budget, but I'm up for anyone wanting to discuss things coming out that they're particularly excited about.

I have a feeling IC 7 is going to be unsatisfying. We can't get any real resolution because 52 is looming as well as the OYL stuff, so I doubt there will be any final nails to close this story. Or can we and will there? Duhn duhn duhnnnnn.

Civil War...I hope it's good. The premise sounds good. I'm just amazed that Marvel is running something like 3 events at the same time (if you count Planet Hulk)! Insane.

And this Batman story, while starting slow, is really picking up. It's...neat to see this Bats. I was so scared they were going to take him too far from what I like about the character, but what we have is a nice balance. Can't wait to see where this goes.

bishop2knight 05-02-06 08:44 PM

I can't get psyched about Civil War simply because I'm worried that I'll need to read like 120 books to get the whole story. I hate that.

According to the official checklist, it's around 79 books. 7 Civil War issues, 10 Civil War: Front Line Issues, Amazing Spider-Man from 529 to 538, etc.

Sounds like Infinite Crisis all over again, which will clock in around, oh, 100+ issues or so? (Including 52)

Yeah, I'm liking that too. It appears they are going back towards the Batman of the 1970's. I got a little too tired of how paranoid Batman was becoming in the last few years.

Well,

Why not throw in BatMite? :p

I like paranoid asshole Bats:( Leave the upbeat, people are good, there's light at the end of the tunnel stuff for Superman and Robin.

Looking through this month's Marvel Previews, "Civil War" seemed to appear on every page!

bishop2knight 05-03-06 07:29 AM

See, that's what I don't like about crossovers. I know, I know. Everyone says the same thing. But man, Civil War sounds fascinating, but I'm not going to dive into it and throw away money just to get the whole story.

FantasticVSDoom 05-03-06 07:33 AM

The only thing about Civil War that has me cautiously optimistic is that Millar is writing it and not BMB. Not that I hate Bendis, but I cant stand reading him issue to issue, its an exercise in futility sometimes. So we will see.

dadaluholla 05-03-06 08:54 AM

I'm certainly glad that Civil War is crossing over into so many different titles. It gave me a good excuse to drop MORE Marvel books from my pull list.

I just dropped Thunderbolts with #100. It was good for a long long while, but somewhere shortly after the reboot it just turned BLAH. I think the only regular series I'm getting now are: Daredevil, Hulk, Punisher, Captain America, Astonishing X-Men, Squadron Supreme... and Walking Dead. So my comic spending is roughly $20 a month now (which a few years ago would have seemed insane to me, when it was probably 3-4 times that much).

MBoyd 05-03-06 01:08 PM

Just read IC #7. Very intense. I was on the edge of my seat reading it.

Spoiler:
The last double splash page we get a glimpse of Batwoman (reddish hair), The Seven Soldiers sans the new Mister Miracle, Captain Marvel Jr as Captain Marvel (I think), and Captain Marvel as some new hooded Marvel character, Hawkman (still not sure where he went and the other JSAers) and Martian Manhunter with a shirt on.

bishop2knight 05-03-06 01:14 PM

Noooooo. Don't tempt me MBoyd. I'm heading to the LCS in a few hours.

I assume it was a good read?

MBoyd 05-03-06 03:32 PM

Excellent read. The spoiler is really only for a double splash page at the end for upcoming characters - Not really IC # 7.

Ditto. Just finished it, and I was impressed that DC managed
Spoiler:
to wrap things up nicely and given explanation - well, some - as to why the Big Three decided to take a year off.

I'm beginning to think that Batman is not the father of Selina's baby. BTW, I love how they are drawing her in the Catwoman books. She does look like a woman who has just given birth, in that they draw her with weight gain and a rounder belly.

After reading Civil War #1, I'm only slightly interested in the rest of the series. I do like that
Spoiler:
Captain America
is against the whole idea of
Spoiler:
super-hero registration
.
