Iron Man Disesembled - Comic
Has anyone read the Iron Man Disesembled?
Was it good? They also put out a Thor and Captain America Disesembled... |
In my opinion, the entire Avengers Disesembled storyline (and all its crossovers) were a complete waste of time. The worse crossovers being Iron Man, Captain America and Spider-Man.
However, the best of the bunch was the Thor storyline. The best Thor story in DECADES. So well done I was actually upset when it was over. Very, very good. And apart from an Iron Man and Captain America appearance, it really doesn't have anything to do with the main Disesembled storyline. If you want to read the Disesembled stuff, definately pick up the Thor arc. The actual Avengers issues were pretty bland but worth the read if you want to know what's going on. Please note that you don't need to read any of the other crossovers to understand what's going on in the Avengers. |
I was actually looking to read a good Iron Man TPB. There seem to be so few.
Also what's the difference between the Ultimates and the Avengers. They both seems like the Justic League give or take a few characters. Finally, does Marvels make sense if you're aren't intimately familiar with the entire Marvels history? I'm not and based on the index in the back of the book, I seem to be missing a lot. |
I'm not much of an Iron Man fan so I can't really comment on a solid run or any good TPB featuring the character. From what I hear tho, the current Ultimate Iron Man mini-series written by Orson Scott Card is getting some good reviews. However, I don't think it's quite finished yet so it'll be awhile before it's collected in a TPB.
The Avengers are Earth's Mightiest Heroes from Marvel's original (and current) universe. They've been through several incarnations since the 60s. Members have usually included Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp and whoever Hank Pym decides to be that week (Ant Man, Yellow Jacket, Goliath, etc, etc, etc). The Original Avengers series ended with the Disesembled Storyline and has recently restarted with a "NEW Avengers" series. The Ultimates are a government sanctioned team from Marvel's relatively new Ultimate Universe. The Ultimate Universe pretty much takes the Marvel characters of old and starts them over in the 21st Century. The Ultimates have to deal with things like Iraq, lack of confidence in the government, weapons of mass destruction, etc. This team consists of a Captain America who has just been thawed out recently, a Thor who is pretty much a hippy with a group of followers, an Iron Man who is a womanizer and serious alcholic. This incarnation of the Avengers is a definate read IMO. There are a couple of TPB available. If you're vaguely familar with who's who in the Marvel Universe, I'm sure you could pick up what's going in a particular storyline. Marvel does a good job of numbering their Trade Release so if you pick up Spider-Man TPB #4, you might want to at least thumb thru the previous releases for a heads up but I really don't think you need a PHD in Marvel U to get the jist of a Trade. In recent memory, Busiek and Perez's run on the Avengers was good. Geoff Johns also had a decent run. The current Captain America series is getting a thumbs up from various people so I'm planning on picking up that Trade when it comes out. Hope that helps. Good reading! |
Hi. Iron Man: Disassembled was pretty bad. Actually the 40 issues before that were all pretty bad too. If you are looking to start reading some Iron Man, the Heroes Return stuff from #1-30 or so was a really good read and thats a good starting point. Armor Wars from the original series is great too, but then I'm a big fan of that whole 200-250 era when there were the battles with Justin Hammer, The Ghost, Blizzard, Whiplash, Boomerang, Force, Grey Gargoyle, Hulk, Rhino, etc...oh and Tony Stark got a perm at one point.

Agreed! Ironman Disassembled sucked rotten eggs! I am a diehard fan of ironman so I got the issues because I have an entire run of Ironman and just couldn't bring myself to stop "cold turkey".
Unfortunately there are not alot of trades with ironman. Here is a quick list: -The Power of Ironman - This one covers the first alcoholic Tony Stark storyline. Highly recommend getting this one. -Ironman: The Armor Wars - This covers the first armor wars and is a superb read!! Good luck trying to find one. I just recently got one on ebay after many years of searching! Marvel really needs to reprint this one. -The Many Armors of Ironman - This is a good primer for Ironman. It showcases stories from Ironman's many years in the iron long johns. Plus you get to see some of Ironman's specialty armors like the kick ass stealth armor and the space armor  Ironman Vs Doctor Doom - Another good one showcasing two stories involving time travel and King Arthur's Camelot!! Ironman: Mask in the Ironman - This one is about a suit of Ironman armor that becomes sentient. Not quite as good as the last trades IMHO! Ironman: Disassembled - DON"T BOTHER! 'Nuff said! Essential Ironman vols 1 & 2 - Reprints Ironman from Tales of Suspense #39 to Ironman #11 in black and white. Classic old school Marvel goodness!! Marvel Masterworks Ironman vols 1 & 2 - Reprints Tales of Suspense #39 to 65 in glorious color!! U.S. Warmachine - Reprints the black and white series from a few years ago starring Tony Stark's friend Jim Rhodes in the War Machine armor. Good read but not in continuity! Here is a quick list of prestige format books: Ironman: The Iron Age book 1 & 2 - Great read about Ironman's early career  Ironman 2020 - Another great read about a descendent of Tony Stark. Love the armor design in this one!! Tales of Suspense featuring Ironman and Captain America - A painted book with the pair taking on a terrorist group called D.A.N.T.E. I also agree with a previous poster and recommend picking up the trades for The Ultimates! Awesome reads! Well hope this list helps you out some! Take care all!! |
I have picked up the tpb for Ultimates Volume one and two. Look forward to a 3. The guy in the comic shop said it would be a while b4 a third volume comes out because they're publishing the individual comics slowsly/irregularly.
Anyway, reading those 2 ultimates got me interested in Iron Man for the first time. |

The Ultimates 2 Vol 1: Gods And Monsters TPB just came out today. It contains The Ultimates 2 #1-6. Just a head's up. |
Man, Marvel really needs to put the Michelinie/Layton runs and the Denny O'Neill run into print. Those are some great stories.

Hey......just got the Ultimates 2.....not sure why they didn't put it in the third volume of the tpb. Guess they rebooted that series too. After a very short time.
I like the way the Ultimates draw Tony Stark. First time i really liked his look too. Usually both him and the suit are kind of generic. They're doing a good job with this character. |
