Comic Book Forums?

Are there any decent comic book forums out there? Something along the lines of DVDTalk, but for comic books?

Just wondering...

Liquid Death 11-01-01 05:00 PM

www.herorealm.com has a message board...

kevin75 11-02-01 07:43 AM

i know that dc has a web board that is separated into all of the major characters. sorry i can't post the address right now but i am at work and don't have it with me.

Donald Brown 11-02-01 10:16 AM

The only comics forum not dominated by adolescent nitwits is The Comics Journal Message Board.

Josh-da-man 11-02-01 10:47 AM

Two not yet mentioned,

There's the comicon board at the http://www.comicon.com

A very good place for the general discussion of comics and industry issues.

The Warren Ellis forum at http://www.delphi.com/ellis

Beware, though, Ellis runs a pretty strict board. It's heavily moderated -- by Ellis' own admission, it's a Stalinist dictatorship -- with a zero tolerance policy toward personal attacks and fanboy blather. He actually has the filter set to remove words like "micronauts" and "transformers." But you can swear all you want to...

Thanks for your help! I will check out each one tonight.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

So I know talking about other forums is becoming more and more forbidden in these parts, but hopefully IB knows that DVDTalk can't cover every subject as fully as it does film media.

And while I wish this sub-forum was a little busier and somehow could cover all of my comic talk needs, I thought I'd bump this thread to see if I'm missing any great comic boards. Is comicbookresources still the largest/best site going?

I've lurked the marvelmasterworks one now and then. They get more involved in some of the topics than we do here, and I've made some discoveries, but I still haven't posted.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

I still find the boards at Comic Book Resources the most active and healthy.

http://forums.comicbookresources.com/forum.php

There are a lot of good character-specific sites in other places.

Marvel Masterworks Messageboard

It skews a little older because most of the enthusiasm there is for collected reprints of older material.

I really wish that board would upgrade their forum software. It looks like something left over from the 1990s.

http://bullpenbulletinspodcast.com/forum/

It's built around the Eleven O'Clock Comics podcast, and there's discussion there on everything from the latest Marvel and DC books to Jacques Tardi to Gundam to Top Shelf.

I like hanging out at the Bendis Board, but comics are not always the central focus.

superherohype, decent amount of comic discussion, but more Cinematic Universe forums.

Wow, seems like yesterday when I bumped this thread, but I guess it's been over 8 months. Any new input? I've checked out all the suggestions, and while some are decent, it seems like there should be some better ones.

Delayed thanks PS, and everyone earlier. I'll be joining a few new forums.

Collectors Society is a great board. Started lurking there recently. Go in the Golden Age section and see how hardcore they are. Like guys who only collect Pre-Robin Detective issues.

Wow, scorched earth at the CBR forums! He basically erased everything and is requiring everyone to re-register because of a few jerks being 4chan-ish. Crazy overkill.

Ridiculous. I read the article and for the most part agreed. People are unbelievable.

There has been a negativity and nastiness that has existed on the CBR forums for too long. Two weeks ago, that long-growing ugliness became more pronounced than ever. CBR published an article by guest contributor Janelle Asselin, critiquing the cover to DC Comics' upcoming "Teen Titans" #1. Some of you liked the article, some of you didn't. We encouraged readers to share their feedback in the CBR Forums.

Unfortunately, what happened next was unacceptable -- so-called "fans" around the Internet, on various message boards and social media, including the CBR Forums, attacked Janelle personally, threatening her with rape and assault. These same "fans" found her e-mail, home address and other personal information, and used it to harass and terrorize her, including an attempted hacking of her bank account.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

The scorched earth thing was ridiculous. Just get moderators and admins who give a damn and do their jobs. No reason to reboot everything. People should be respectful to each other online but that's a two way street. There are industry people who are less than respectful on message boards like CBR. In general CBR's forum management has always been subpar, and I don't see that changing in the future.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

Agreed that it sucks that they're burning down the house to get rid of a few rats.

Not sure why they don't just ban the troublemakers and delete troll posts. I wasn't a poster at the CBR forums, but I was occasionally able to find some good information there. (Like binding problems on Absolute and Omnibus hardcovers.)

The Valeyard 05-02-14 10:46 AM

Re: Comic Book Forums?

I rarely posted at CBR anymore. Some mods were just trolls with banning abilities. Also tired of industry "professionals" like Dan Slott acting exactly like the people he's mocking.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

I singed up to CBR back in 2005 and had under a thousand posts so it does not hit me like it is a lot of others. I understand both parties and the old forums should stay in a archive.

Looks like they're going the way of Gallifrey Base - Over-moderation. Anything considered "rude," will be deleted. You can't even call someone a "hack" because it's rude.

Hopefully they find a balance. I'm sure most of us can handle someone being rude.

I was never a member of GB ... is that the one you had to register for to be able to read?

Too bad; nothing kills a discussion board more than over-moderation. There's a really sweet spot you need to operate in order to build a decent community, where you don't let trolls and spammers run amok, but also don't moderate with such a heavy hand that it stifles conversation.

I looked in on the CBR forums yesterday and it looks like they've already banned a bunch of people (who just signed up) and closed a number of threads.

This is going to be a trainwreck.

Re: Comic Book Forums?

Wow, I've been watching the CBR thing a bit. The creator of the site has been posting and I can't believe how thin skinned they are. I just noticed this when someone made an analogy about them wiping the entire board because of a minority of really terrible people.

That is like nuking a country because of a certain group of 100 people out of 1000000.
That is an offensive comparison -- one is the annihilation of human beings, one is not.

These kind of ridiculous histrionics is what will get people banned. Act maturely, have constructive reactions, discuss your concerns, but this is unacceptable.
So then users started throwing out things saying "Would this be bannable?" Because really, right now it seems anything that a single person on the planet could find offensive is bannable...which could be anything. The site admin posted this and then locked the thread:

OK, I hope everyone is reading these posts. The mods are really trying to help get you guys in to the community. Some of you aren't listening. Some of you are creating ridiculous scenarios out of thin air.

Be smart. Act kindly. Have fun.

It's very simple.

This thread is locked. If someone else starts a new thread retreading the same ground, it'll be locked and you'll be banned.
Yeah, this will end well. -rolleyes-

When they start throwing the ban hammer around for even questioning them there are going to be issues and people will leave. I've been to forums that anytime a little debate started someone would lock or delete the topic. Seriously! I'm sure we can handle others options without falling apart.

I doubt I would have any direct issues with the new rules so it's more about how it affects the place as a whole. I've been to forums where I never felt relaxed to post because they had this general vague way of almost having to find a topic worthy. Just let people talk, relax without having to overthink it.

Or, oh, if you want to talk about that subject go to the vague thread with the wrong title on page fifteen post twenty one and page one hundred and ninety fine of that post. -_-

Questioning or ignoring a moderator’s decree on the forums may result in a ban from the site, as will ignoring any warnings issued privately.
I understand the ignoring and dealing with it in private. However the way it's worded is so heavy handed.

Comic book fans are very opinionated and passionate about their favorite characters. Go on 4chan's comics forum and you'll see what fully unleashed fans are about.
