Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, Volume 2: More Ghost Stories by M.R. James. Excellent stuff, many memorable stories. People of this forum will recognize Passing the Runes because it was made into fine movie Night of the Demon.
I was happy to be reading the book on a Kindle. James wrote the stories in the 1890s and 1900s, occasionally using what were then old-fashioned words. For example, a "clue" is a ball of string. With the Kindle, I could look the words up with a touch. |

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...c6ecc2e829.png Yeah, I'm a little late for this to be perfectly in season :) My second Brom book (I read The Child Thief last year) and I like his style a lot. Twisted fantasies that put spins on familiar legends, but with a lot of heart. If you ever wanted to see Krampus vs Santa Claus in a bloody fight to the death, this is your book! |
Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
Re-read Casino Royale by Ian Fleming. It's the first James Bond book. I had forgotten what a weird book it is. The villain is killed off at the 2/3rds mark. The rest of the book is James Bond recovering psychologically from having been tortured.

Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
I finished Wizards and Glass book IV and onto Wolves of Calla book V. not really looking forward to the Song of Sussanah to me that is the weakest link in the series.
Skipping Wind thru the Keyhole book 4.5 for this go around as I am finally buying the Kindles as I go and don't feel that one is worth 14.99 |

Now adding 'Harlan Ellison's Watching' to the mix.

I've started my first Stephen King book! For some reason I think I've had some sort of bias against his work - although I honestly can't recall why. But I picked up 11/22/63 and started it the other day. (sure, pick a 1000+ pager to start with! ) My initial reaction - just a few chapters in - is that I'm really enjoying it! Let's see if that holds for the next 900 pages!

I'm a pretty big King fan but haven't been rabid since the '80s. 11/22/63 is one I resisted forever but read it last year. It's fantastic. Great place to start. When you're done you can watch the mini-series, which makes enough changes to be worth watching on its own merits.

Ooh, I didn't know about the mini-series. Also, I exaggerated the page count; it's only around 850.

11/22/63 is a good book. It even has a good ending!

Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
I'm forgiving of many of King's endings, but yes, this one satisfies on all counts.

Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
11/22/63 was a great read. I've read most of King's work but not all and it's one of my favorites. I remember I devoured it while on vacation with my family shortly after it came out. I also recall my wife being mad at me during that vacation. ;)

Just finished:
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...922fe39cc7.jpg I know that I'm in the minority on this one, but I actually liked the way that this book ended--no vitriol from me. Since this was a re-read, I was able to look for things that might possibly point to the way things turn out, and they're there from the first few chapters. Sure, it's not the ending that most people wanted, but sometimes things don't work out like we expect that they will. Up next: https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...62efb32982.jpg |
