My favorite book this year so far. It took 200 pages to get into gear, but it really got into gear. |
Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
Finished:
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...cbd68a4f67.png The Trouble With Peace by Joe Abercrombie. The 2nd book in his latest trilogy set in the First Law world. This series is really grabbing me now and it helps that I have a handle on all of the characters now (like GRRM's fantasy, the books shift between multiple character POVs who area spread out over the world). I stayed up an hour later than planned yesterday to finish it, which only do for things I'm really enjoying. Characters who change and reveal more depth than expected, gritty action, plot twists and intrigue, dark sense of humor ... all trademarks of Abercrombie's earlier writing that this is delivering on. I'm moving right on the 3rd book to finish this. |

Just finished:
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...f7a1e1beb8.jpg Not laugh-out-loud funny, but wryly amusing. I liked it. Up next: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...ce6ca285bb.jpg |
Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
I don't remember details, but I remember reading
The Loved One in high school, and enjoying it. Definitely a droll, satirical dark humor, not LOL. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...8735f13a82.jpg We Ride upon Sticks, about a high school girl's field hockey team in Danvers MA in 1989 who resort to witchcraft to turn their tides. My wife spent a lot of time in Boston and I keep saying "Do you know where X is?" when it's referenced in the book and she's like, Yeah, we went there all the time. Also https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...be91d41df5.jpg We Sold our Souls, about ex-rocker, current-hotel-front-desk-clerk Kris Pulaski, whose fortunes changed drastically one night twenty years ago, and whose former bandmate is now the hottest musical act in the world. Weird stuff starts happening. I will definitely look for more from Grady Hendrix (which, by the way, would also be an awesome rock star name.) |

Ghost Story is one of my all time favorites but I must admit I never managed to get around to any of his other works. He kind of lost me when he started writing mysteries in the late 80s. And I don't think I've ever read his two horror books before Ghost Story (Julia and If You Could See Me Now). Although I remember the movie adaptation of Julia. |

Crap, I'm just finding out he died in this thread too :( Ghost Story is one of my all-time favorites too. I would think Shadowland would be a good one for you to check out, as I think it's his other book most similar in style and tone to Ghost Story. Floating Dragon was his follow-up to that, and felt very Stephen King-like (and maybe it's not a surprise that his next book was The Talisman, written with King).

I have If You Could See Me Now queued up, and reread Floating Dragon a couple years ago.) |

Re: What Are You Reading? 2022
Finished Joe Abercrombie's Age of Madness trilogy (The Wisdom of Crowds):
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...1bcf3351d4.png A satisfying conclusion, with more plot twists, betrayals, hidden reveals (with hidden reveals behind hidden reveals). I really appreciate fantasy authors like Abercrombie, Sanderson, Hobb who seem like they know where they're going with a series, and have all the books published in a reasonable amount of time. While the story wraps itself up, there are some gigantic hanging plot points that sound like they'll be the subject of another trilogy (set probably 10-15 years after this one). |
