What Are You Reading? 2021

This weekend was reading about different countries in Europe because I want to choose 2-3 for a car trip this spring. It's going to be my first car road trip in life. Came across some really interesting places to visit and also information about Spain investment citizenship here. I didn't know that you can buy property and receive a passport of a country in Europe that easy. Seems like people who have enough money are really free in doing a lot of things.

I requested that the mods make this post the first in the new thread. I guess that Book Talk mods don't have my sense of humor.

Finished The Rubber Band by Rex Stout. The third Nero Wolfe book. It has one great gimmick and one that hasn't aged well.

Read the entire Saxon series for the first time last year just in time for this, the final book, to be released.

Good book that I put off for a long time (not being in the mood for 800 pages of pandemic horror). Though I would've put it off even longer if I knew that in addition to a pandemic, gun-wielding American fascist terrorists were a huge part of the story too.

I read this a few months ago and liked it, but kinda feel the same. It was borderline spooky how many similarities exist between the book and everything that's happened since publication. This is an interesting article that gets into it.

That's from March. The article tries to be optimistic saying at least "a bloodthirsty, alt-right insurgency isn't springing up around all the panic and threatening to overthrow the government". January 2021 says "Hold my beer" :(

Heh, yeah I found that ironic. But just another thing the book “predicted.”

I just finished this, and I found it to be compulsively readable. Unfortunately, it didn't really resonate with me. The author seems to have a weird preoccupation with freckles and what various characters' breaths smell like. It's going straight into the "donate" stack.

Up next: Nitro Mountain, by Lee Clay Johnson

Started Contact by Carl Sagan today. This will be my 2nd time. It's one of my favorite books (and totally destroyed the movie for me) (which I really liked until I read the book  ). I plan on fully enjoying the re-experience of this.

Fools Assasin - Robin Hobb

After close to two years, I've made it through the 16 books in this series. Some were great, some were really good, none made me wish I hadn't ever read them. They all came to a head in the final 2 books, and tied up nicely, if not a bit bittersweet. I'm glad I read them, and would recommend the series to other fantasy fans.

I've seen The Wheel of Time series recommended in a lot of places, so I thought I'd try them out.

Some Buried Caesar by Rex Stout. I've been reading a lot of Nero Wolfe books lately, and this is one of the best. It introduces the last member of the regular cast, Lilly Rowan, the woman who is Archie's offstage romantic interest for the rest of the series.

I don’t know if it really matters, but that prequel was written after much of the series. If you were to read by publication order you’d need to start with Eyes of the World.
