Are these books good? I don't know anyone IRL who has read them.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...a0b935483a.jpg The coolest thing about this book of short stories was that each short story referenced at least one of the other short stories in the book. By the end of the book, it felt like I had read a novel instead of a book of short stories, yet each story can stand alone as well. The best story in the book, "Sewing for the Heart," is very icky and very good. All of the short stories are dark, but none could really be called horror tales. Re: What Are You Reading? 2021
Burning Chrome - William Gibson. I haven't read many of the stories in the book since it came out in the 1980s. Now I understand why I didn't like some of them. I liked the stories where the protagonist beat the system, but never re-read the bulk of the stories where the protagonist gets crushed. It's not a happy collection.

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7da02f850e.jpg Pretty good first novel from an author who's widely-respected these days. It's another example of what seemed to be a late '70s trope--children covering up the deaths of their parents in order to stay together as a family. Stephen King called it a horror novel, but I'm not so sure that I agree (although there are a couple of horrible things in it). Up next: https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...243672a62c.jpg |

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...b6e01e8343.jpg I bought the novel after seeing the film because I was confused on a couple of plot points, and I hoped that reading the novel would clear them up. As it turns out, the novel is even more confusing than the movie. It's still a fun read. Up next: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7d0189490f.jpg Time for a re-read of this most aptly-named of novels. |
