I feel pulled in a lot of directions right now. On a creative level I have these story ideas I want to put to paper. Iím also writing bits of music here and there as inspiration hits, and want to revisit these and expand on them. But thereís this work credential I need to be studying for so I can schedule the exam. Iím hoping to get that squared away before November so I can really focus on NaNoWriMo.
Then thereís the movies, books, and tv shows that keep getting added to my mental backlog. Thereís just not enough hours in the day, but one thing this year has shown me that life is too short to waste on Facebook, and most of those tv shows I spend so many hours a week on are just a massive, pointless time suck. And Iím not even missing them now that theyíre gone. I donít think Iíll be going back to a majority of the stuff I used to kill time on, especially the DC stuff on CW. Itís only good like 5% of the time, anyway. I didnít let myself get sucked into the current Big Brother season, either. I uploaded all my Facebook photos to Google Docs, and once I have a chance to go through those and make sure everything I want actually transferred, my profile is getting the axe.

Revisiting King's 'The Stand' decades after I last read it.
It's a whopper, but I'm a King fan, so there....

This is like the third or fourth Chinese-translated book I've read this year and I still have a heck of a time getting used to the names. But it pulled me right in, so I think I'm going to enjoy it.
Just finished this! Holy moley, it takes some interesting turns! Really liked this and should be getting The Dark Forest in a few days. Curious how a different translator will "feel". I recommend this to anyone interested in science fiction!

Robin Hobb - City of Dragons

The last in this 4 book series. Lots of focus in this series on relationship drama, not quite as much about the dragons and their journey. This book is better so far, and I look forward to where it ends up.

Finished Doctor Sleep, and really enjoyed it. Time for some paperback Western fun:

Re: What are you reading? 2020

Finished:

I was hoping to like this more than I ended up, especially after investing so much reading time (it's a long book). It certainly check-marks as influences other things I like such as early Stephen King (like It and The Stand), Stranger Things, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. But after getting off to a strong start I was struggling to maintain interest just as the horror and fantasy elements were really cranked up. And no matter how hard Chbosky tried, deer just aren't scary.

Re: What are you reading? 2020

Finished Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons, the Damascus Incident, and the Illusion of Safety by Eric Schlosser. It's a description of the ICBM that exploded in 1980 in Damascus, Arkansas, and the context of how the US nuclear arsenal was designed with as little safety as the military could get away with. He cites incidents like Goldboro, where all the safeties failed but one, and that last one is why Washington DC isn't radioactive like the countryside downwind of Chernobyl.

Excellent reading.

This is a pretty crazy book in terms of its pace and action. It reminded me of Anne Rice's Tales of the Body Thief, but on acid. I'm actually only 40% done with the book and when I went in to copy and paste the thumbnail I see that it's only Book 1. I assume it's a trilogy like The Strain was.

Re: What are you reading? 2020

Sadly some authors seem to only have a finite amount of stories in them. I’ve loved other stuff by Peter Clines, in particular 14 and The Fold, which are the first two books of this series (this is number 4). I’m only halfway through so maybe it’ll get better, but so far this is absurdly dull. I hate having to say this since I’ve waited so long for a proper follow-up, and the 3rd book is just filler that doesn’t progress the story.
Oh, and NOT an Audible exclusive anymore, I just couldn’t find a better photo.

Re: What are you reading? 2020

Hopefully Terminus gets better. I'm a big fan of 14 and The Fold too. I really enjoyed Paradox Bound as well (though it wasn't in that series, and is more sci-fi/adventure than horror). I was "meh" on Dead Moon. Didn't hate it like some seemed to, but didn't like it anywhere near the others of Clines that I read.

That does make me a little sad when I "lose" an author whose work I really enjoy ... either from them jumping to a genre or style I just don't enjoy as much, or the writing quality seeming to slip.

Re: What are you reading? 2020

Just finished, man that was fantastic. I went into this pretty much blind and was blown away, one of my favorite books ever. Now I guess I need to watch the mini-series. My dad loved it when I was younger, but I always wrote it off as another one of his shitty old cowboy movies.

Anyone have any opinions on the other books in the series? I didnt even know that there were more until recently.

I started Troubled Blood one of the more controversial books released this year. It's 944 pages. I'll probably finish it around September 2021. I love the characters even though the author has had issues this year and needs better editing.
