Read:

From a yard sale long ago -- it bears yellow masking tape with a horse stamp and a price of 20 cents. Reading it evoked many scenes from the original movie I remember well. Nice, quick read in advance of...

Assassin's Quest - Robin Hobb

Spoiler:
King Shrewd is dead at the hands of his son Regal. As is Fitz—or so his enemies and friends believe. But with the help of his allies and his beast magic, he emerges from the grave, deeply scarred in body and soul. The kingdom also teeters toward ruin: Regal has plundered and abandoned the capital, while the rightful heir, Prince Verity, is lost to his mad quest—perhaps to death. Only Verity’s return—or the heir his princess carries—can save the Six Duchies.

But Fitz will not wait. Driven by loss and bitter memories, he undertakes a quest: to kill Regal. The journey casts him into deep waters, as he discovers wild currents of magic within him—currents that will either drown him or make him something more than he was.

Re: What Are U Reading?! (January 2020)

Finished Gust Front by John Ringo, the second of the War Against the Posleen series. I don't know if I'll read any more. The climatic battle scene was good, but up until then I considered putting down the book a few times.

I just learned that Tom Kratman wrote a side-series in the same universe where the SS are the good guys. Not a big surprise from him. It doesn't matter: I won't be reading any other books by Kratman.

Re-reading Message from Malaga by Helen MacInnes. She spent most of her career writing about heroes battling Nazi spies, but by the 1970s she had to switch to KGB spies. She seems to be a forgotten author. I'm enjoying it.

Started The Arabian Nights translated by Richard Burton. I'm a half-dozen tales in, and I'm enjoying it. I last read it in high school, and ran down halfway through the book.

I read the Penguin edition of Moby Dick. The commentary footnotes were helpful. I read it in my early 20s and loved it.

Had to take a break from the Joseph Heller, so grabbed The Killer Across the Table by John ‘Mindhunter’ Douglas and Mark Olshaker today.

I anticipate finishing it in a couple days tops, depending on my busy-ness level ...

Last night's Final Jeopardy -- 1960s Novels:
This book defines its own title as “concern for one’s own safety in the face of dangers… was the process of a rational mind”
Spoiler:

I think it's a sign.

Re: What Are U Reading?! (January 2020)

I finished the 4 Murderbot Diaries novellas (by Martha Wells). I really liked them, and they've won some major awards if that sort of thing matters to anyone (like the Hugo and Nebula). They were fun (and often funny) reading and the central character and story was engaging to me: a human-looking robot gains self-control and decides it prefers watching tv instead of killing people. And it has adventures to make money, find out more about its past, and is troubled that it finds itself forming emotional connections with the people and other bots it travels with. A negative that has nothing to do with the quality of the writing ... it's an absolute rip-off that these are being sold individually priced like full-length books (all 4 novellas total up to the length of one average novel).

I’m working my way through this, and might move on to his novels once I’m done. I tried to read Ubik once a few years ago but couldn’t get into it, so that might be the one I give another chance to next.

Ship of Destiny - Robin Hobb

Start of a new trilogy in the same world as the rest of the books I've been reading. Apparently focusing on new characters, so I'm not sure if it'll be as gripping as the rest.

Spoiler:
As Bingtown slides toward disaster, clan matriarch Ronica Vestrit, branded a traitor, searches for a way to bring the city's inhabitants together against a momentous threat. Meanwhile, Althea Vestrit, unaware of what has befallen Bingtown and her family, continues her perilous quest to track down and recover her liveship, the "Vivacia, "from the ruthless pirate Kennit.
Bold though it is, Althea's scheme may be in vain. For her beloved "Vivacia "will face the most terrible confrontation of all as the secret of the liveships is revealed. It is a truth so shattering, it may destroy the "Vivacia "and all who love her, including Althea's nephew, whose life already hangs in the balance.
