I quickly finished Curious Incident and am now reading How Music Works by David Byrne and am teeing up Dune Messiah next.

While the whole revisionist approach to superhero stories is getting beaten to death in all forms of media, I still found this very entertaining. It's nice to rip through a lean book in a handful of days after spending about a month to finish a 1600 page fantasy epic (Brandon Sanderson's Oathbringer).

I have the DVD in my massive unwatched pile. I may watch it after just to see how things are actually pronounced as opposed to what I'm imagining.

Really enjoying it so far!

It's a doozy. Good that you haven't seen it yet; I couldn't stop imagining the characters as looking and sounding like their movie counterparts.

reading the Terror, man those poor people..... have not seen the show or heard how this turns out but my suspicion is this ends well for all of them... can't imagine the horror of being stuck on the ice for so damn long with no fresh food or real hope of rescue...

I'm in the 6th Dune book and I havent seen any of the movies or tv shows either. Its going to be a trip to actually hear how some of the stuff is pronounced.

Sounds like a good book! If you enjoy historical nonfiction, Endurance, about Shackleford's expedition, is gripping as all fuck.

A different kind of book that I usually read. This is a gothic mystery (the author is heavily influenced by writers like Agatha Christie, Patricia Highsmith, and Daphne du Maurier, especially her novel Rebecca ). I quite enjoyed it though. At times I feared I was getting myself into the book equivalent of a Lifetime movie, but it ended up having more of an edge (and there was no unneeded romance subplot that you a Lifetime movie would've had). It sounds like Ruth Ware's earlier books (Woman in Cabin 10 and In a Dark Dark Place) have had more acclaim so I should check them out at some point.

Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor by Mervyn Peake, the man who later wrote Gormenghast. The book is based on stories he told and illustrated for his sons, so it's about pirates and monsters. What else? Peake even did the lettering of the text. The tone changes halfway through and it has a happy ending. I bought the book for my Mervyn Peake collection.

Mistress Marsham's Repose by T.H. White, who wrote The Once and Future King. A girl who lives in a decrepit palace in modern England discovers Lilliputians nearby. It was written before World War II, and before the aristocracy lost their lands. I thought that it was kind of dated, and the horrible grownups didn't always stay on the right side of the line between entertaining and disturbing.

The Best Man to Die by Ruth Rendell, a murder mystery by Ruth Rendell. Clever, class-conscious, but ultimately dull. It was just interesting enough that I forced my way through it to see what happened next.

Finished Bright Orange for the Shroud by John D. MacDonald. It started out like the previous book, but it quickly diverged. After the nihilist endings of some of the previous books, it was nice to see Travis McGee get a pile of money and the girl not get killed. I liked it.

Currently reading Lost Horizon by James Hilton. I'm glad that I'm familiar with the "oriental adventure" pulp fiction genre, because Hilton is basing his more literary novel on that material. So far it's just okay. Talbot Mundy covered the same territory with a lot more excitement, and The Razor's Edge by Maugham discussed the philosophical issues with more energy and wit. Still, it is the source of the phrase "Shangri-La" for an unreachable paradise.

I heard about this anthology from a Laird Barron short story collection, and the idea of stories that explore what things would be like if Cthulhu "wins" intrigued me. Not unexpectedly it's a mixed bag. But there were enough things I liked to make the read worth the effort.

Finished Good Omens a week or so ago I liked it but dont know if I would revisit it like the rabid fans of the book. I'm not sure seeing the show kept me from falling too deeply in love with it or the pressure to finsih it quickly as I was reading a Overdrive loan copy and had 7 days with no renewal window and had to finish the Terror before that. Didn't enjoy the end of the Terror very much as it was kind of 'out there' and the story-line is basically discredited by the actual boat being intact and in decent shape at the bottom of the Canadian Arctic, it was really disappointing how much was made out of thin air as I'd had some hope that the book was based on something given the specific details they went into. Kinda weird and very unsatisfying for me. :(

Reading Salem's Lot now by Sai King. Will likely read the Institute soon as I'm giving my wife a copy for her B-day tomorrow. Shhhh ;) Also taking her to see Steve and Joe talk in Summerville MA next month.

I also have Stephen King's Institute but im busy reading Star Wars Lost Stars, Star Wars Aftermath Trilogy and Star Wars Bounty Hunter Wars pretty much for all of October. But whenever I do get done with Star Wars Lost Stars, Ill probably start reading a little bit of The Institute

Finished Dune! After the initial shock of all them new words, it was actually a very comfortable read.

Not sure what's next yet.
