Re: What Are You Reading? (April 2019)

Reading Plain Murder by C.S. Forrester. It's a crime novel written during the Depression. A white collar worker commits murder to keep his job, and then decides that murder is a good tactic. It was too grim to be popular in the era of hero detectives like Hercule Poirot and Father Brown, but it reads very well today.

I read Payment Deferred, another murder novel by Forrester, a month ago, and liked that one too.

Finished the Dunk and Egg GRRM book. I want more of their stories! But, I'd rather have him finished Song of Ice and Fire first.

Started Dune (1st time!)

 I'm currently looking for a hardcover copy of that!

Finished The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I read it decades ago (late '70s-early '80s) and really enjoyed it this time around! It was a nice diversion from the dryness of Foundation.

Not sure what's next. Might read some comic strip books for a few days.

Assuming that you do not mean to pick up a vintage edition, B&N has a nice looking edition that I've seen in their stores.
Price says $25, but you could obviously get it cheaper.

While there's still clearly a lot of story remaining in the series (1 more 1000+ page monster already written and 7 more books planned ), this ended in a more satisfying way than the last book ... bringing together all of the major characters and wrapping up several main story arcs.

You're very welcome!
Note that the B&N Collectible Editions are currently B1G1 50% Off, in case there's another title that you're interested in.

I'm checking those out - some interesting stuff there!

I won the Dune book on Ebay and received it today. Not as fancy as the B&N version, but still nice (with dustcover!).

Currently into Second Foundation; wanting to finish up this trilogy. So far it's a bit more engaging than the first two books.

Necropolis PD by Nathan Sumsion

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...d68d7fe1c.jpeg

This is his first published novel. He has a D&D-like Vampire campaign that was published a few years ago and has been a game designer for 20 years (Wizard 101, Far Cry, Meet the Robinsons, Disney Infinity, Circus Maximus, Legends of Wrestling II, etc.). He and I went to undergrad together and kept in touch. Great guy... and I’m only 30 pages into it, but so far so good.

You should be able to get it anywhere.

I’m also rereading Timediver’s Dawn by L.E.Modesitt Jr.

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...7ceca1223.jpeg

I read it back in college. After rereading it, I’m going to read Timegods... which takes place before this one.

Finished a couple of books in the last week:

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...1b68b5a23a.jpg

I liked the other novel I read by this author (Red Claw) better. This had some good ideas and a raw visceral style but just didn't stick the landing for me. Also:

Solid collection of novellas that show a bit of range.

Finished the Foundation Trilogy and started The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold. I read it back in 1975 and remember it being an intriguing time travel story.

Re: What Are You Reading? (April 2019)

I’m in a rut where I run across a book that sounds good, I get 25-50% through and lost interest, and ca’t bring myself to finish. I’ve had these ruts off and on for years but alway come out of it after a month or two. This current rut has been the longest I can remember. I think part of it is a combination of all the good tv I’m trying to stay on top off combined with the ADHD I was finally recently diagnosed with.
So I decided that I’d stick with short stories for a little while and see if those easily digestible lengths can get the spark back. I decided to delve into King’s Night Shift since there’s a handful of stories in it that I never got around to reading. I skipped Jerusalem’s Lot for now and started on Graveyard Shift, and about to start Night Surf.

Re: What Are You Reading? (April 2019)

Keeper of the Keys - Earl Derr Biggers
The Black Camel - Earl Derr Biggers
Dancers in Mourning - Margery Allingham

Started:
Behind that Curtain - Earl Derr Biggers

The Biggers books are Charlie Chan mysteries. They were his attempt to create a Chinese hero at the height of the Yellow Peril moral panic. They are entertaining, kind of pulpy, and characterizations that were progressive in the 1930s are kind of racist today. Oh well, time marches on.

The Allingham book is an Albert Campion mystery. It's much better written than the Charlie Chan books. It's about murder in a theatrical troupe, so the characters are all about personal drama, all the time. I hate people who are into personal drama, so it was hard to get started on a book that was about that kind of people. But I got into it after a few chapters.

For reason, Joe Hill's first book is the only one that I never got around to reading. One thing I really like is how Hill mixes in touching stories with nasty ones. And you don't really know which one you're going to get until you get to the end. Though of course, like his father, sometimes Joe Hill gives you a little of both in the same story.

Bought this at a local Dollar Tree. Found it worth reading for all the interviews (Donner, Neill, Kidder, Dini and etc). With foreword by Mark Waid.

Started Slaughterhouse Five yesterday. I think I'm gonna finish that one quicker than my usual slow pace, based on the little I read so far!
