Hardcore Harry Potter Deathly Hallows question

I read the book when it came out but not since. I am working through all the audio-books. And I just listened to "The Silver Doe" chapter.

I remember from the movie that the silver doe was revealed to be Snape's patronus because it had been Lily Potter's. And I think it was either strongly implied or said outright that that meant it was Snape who placed the sword of Gryffindor in the lake for Harry to discover.

But earlier in the book, a goblin said that the sword in Snape's office was a fake.

So if any hardcore Potter-phile wants to go ahead and explain how the true sword ended up in the lake, I would appreciate it. It has been bothering me all day.

Re: Hardcore Harry Potter Deathly Hallows question

Short answer: Snape replaced the real sword with a fake to keep it out of the wrong hands (Voldemort, the Ministry) and kept the real one hidden until he could get it into Harry’s hands.
