My book club always selects an extra-long book for December/January for our February meeting and this year we're doing my pick, A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn. I'm sure it's going to be a really cheery read!

just last night i started reading and looking at the stuff in the hardcover book of Final Fantasy Ultimania Archive Volume 1. Cool stuff such as artwork of the random monster enemies etc.
Im already at the part in the book for Final Fantasy V and VI.

Finished:
Daryl Gregory is an author I really have to catch up with (this and The Devil's Alphabet are the only books of his I read, and I loved both). This seemed like the kind of character-driven genre crossing story that the Cohen brothers would make: with family drama, fantasy/science-fiction, quirky comedy, romance, spies, mobsters. It took some time to get familiar with the characters (especially since the story liberally jumps across different time periods). But everything came together by the ending.

Finished:
Daryl Gregory's debut novel and another great book. It surprised me by starting out a bit silly but then getting deep and powerful by the end.

As for now, just finished 'Life Itself' by Roger Ebert, and am now reading 'Missing: The Oregon City Girls - A Shocking True Story of Abduction and Murder' - because it's the holidays.

As you can see, I've had a chance to catch up with some reading in the last couple of weeks
I had previously read the author's Lost Boy ... and I really enjoyed the ultra-dark twisting of a well-known fairy tale, so I looked forward to what seemed to be her most acclaimed book. It didn't disappoint, and if anything was even darker and nastier. I liked that it was a very loose "reimagining" since I've seen so many versions of the Alice story.

So I'm basically tearing up or outright sobbing every few pages at all the ghastly tragedies that have done in the name of money and power above all other things, including human life. Our nation's history - and present - is messed up.

Just started 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (why another sea book??). Two people from wildly different backgrounds suggested it, so here I am. Gotta say, after struggling through Moby Dick, it's nice to be reading something of a more familiar style.

Easily the least of the three books I've read by Christina Henry (the other two being Lost Boy and Alice). This in particular suffers in comparison to it's predecessor Alice. Especially since it's lacking the most striking things about the first book (twisted versions of the Lewis Carroll books and horror tone) while continually reminding you of those things. Even the title character (Red Queen) barely appears. Overall this is still a decent fantasy book though (and a quick read at barely over 200 pages).

goodreads doesn't let me pick 3.5/5 for a rating, but that's where I'd place this. I like the idea and story, but I don't think the "interview" style of writing helps tell this story better (than a traditional narrative style). I know this question will likely get buried in the thread ... but are the other books in the series worth reading? And it's only two more books, right?
Since keeping track of my reading on goodreads, 2018 had new highs for books (42) and pages (16,096) read.
