It was a bit long, but pretty good.

What was a negative for die-hard fans of the series (that this is a mostly stand-alone book with a brand new setting and almost all brand new characters) was a positive for me. Particularly since it's been 3 years since I read the last book in the series. While there was still a great deal of philosophical anguish, I was pleasantly surprised to find a lighter touch applied to numerous characters.

I'm a bit scared of the next book in the series though. From the back cover, The Bonehunters looks to be including pretty much every character from all the preceding books who are still alive (and Erikson isn't particularly helpful reminding me who people are or what they look like, aside from the brief Dramatis Personae in the front). And this next book is also physically intimidating (about 3 times the thickness of a normal book and over 1200 pages )

I'm starting Lethal White by Robert Galbraith (J.K. Rowling) today. I have been waiting to read this for a long time. I have to go get a new drivers license today and reading this will be a good way to help pass the wait time.

You heard right. A fast and tight read that does have a good sense of humor.

It's nice to get into something short after a Malazan monster. And this is a book best tackled relatively quickly, I think. I like that it made a different-feeling story about a familiar one (young girl possibly possessed by a demon in an all-American family). I can see how not all readers will care for the deliberate pace and ambiguity, but I think that made it more powerful and thought-provoking by the end.

Those are good. My daughter made me read them. I was reluctant at first, but ended up really enjoying the series.

Currently reading ‘We Have Always Lived in the Castle’ by Shirley Jackson.

Ditto. Started it the day it came out. Been busy with other stuff since then so I'm only about half done, but I'm enjoying it.

Wanted something spooky leading up to October (when I've usually put aside reading to rack up total in the horror viewing challenge). Another strong collection by Barron. Compared to earlier stories, he seemed a lot more willing to unleash the gore and action at the end of these.
