wow!
I know 2018 is young, but this is the best thing I've read this year (or in a long time)

I really enjoyed this. It's essentially Sherlock Holmes reimagined as young twenty-something orphan in South Central. 4/5

Re: What Are You Reading? (March 2018)

Just finished:

There's a hint of Stephen King's 'The Body' (aka 'Stand By Me') in this sort-of-coming-of-age story of a group of 12-year-olds in 1986 England, but that comparison is really unfair to Tudor. Despite the surface similarities 'The Chalk Man' is its own animal, a mercilessly dark tale of life, death, friendship, love, aging and vengeance. Tudor is honest and brutal in where she takes the narrative, and this one was really, really tough to put down. Bleak. Tragic. Pretty damn amazing.

Re: What Are You Reading? (March 2018)

Fun reading has taken a recent hit, due to many things I have to read for work and a tough schedule

Finished:

And that finishes up the Otori trilogy. I found the whole thing a mixed bag. While the shorter page lengths seemed attractive at first, I thought the series as a whole suffered for it. The author loves gives pages and pages of characters talking about their feelings about love and politics/society. But she doesn't like going into detail about when things actually happen (with battle and action sections reading like an outline). I see there are a couple of more books in the series (a "15 years later" followup and a prequel). But I may have had my fill of this series (and author).

After a series that took itself very seriously, I was in the mood for some pulpy trashy (and I mean that in a positive way) fun

But the only books of his outside that series that I've read were the Pine Deep trilogy (his first novels, written about 10 years ago). Everything else of his recently besides the Joe Ledger books have been either zombie books, YA, edited anthologies, or tv/movie tie-ins (none of which have appealed to me). Glad to hear he's trying something different with a stand-alone genre novel.

This has really mixed reviews on Goodreads and Amazon, but I quite liked it. Very pulpy and fast-paced. Maybe his style is a little too graphic for sci-fi fans (maybe being more in line with horror)? Anyway, I'll have to check out some of his other books.
