Terry Pratchett, Author of Fantasy 'Discworld' Novels, Dies at 66

Terry Pratchett, the British author of the popular "Discworld" series of fantasy novels, has died of a form of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 66, his publishing house said on Thursday.

Pratchett died at home surrounded by his family with his cat sleeping on his bed, Transworld Publishers said.

RIP Terry. I love Discworld and need to read more of his novels. He also made a fascinating documentary on the right to die that I highly recommend.

:( Way too young. Briefly got into Discworld way back when and loved the humor, always planned to go back and read them all someday.

Only book of his I've read is "Good Omens" (co-written with Neil Gaiman) and really enjoyed it; never read anything else because his Discworld didn't sound like my thing.

I used to love the two Discworld games they made. I always wanted to read the books. Going to start The Color of Magic this weekend.

RIP :(

The Discworld books are always fun to read in between other, heaver things, especially anything involving DEATH. 66 is young, what a bummer. Even though I have no idea what he looks like, the image of someone dying with their family and cat is "nice".

Not into social satire? His best books weren't about idiot wizards.

One book was about a guy who bought an essential industry with the intent of sucking all the money out of it and bankrupting it.
One was about the problems of a free press.
One was about dealing with wacky and dangerous foreign governments because they control the energy reserves.
One considered whether it's slavery to create A.I. machines and put them to work.

The best part of Pratchett was that he assumed that his readers were intelligent and could keep up with his sense of humor.

Millennium hand and shrimp! Only seven (now eight) posts?

Josh: give them a try. Like Nick said, it is not just your average Sword & Sorcery stuff.

Plus, you don't have to read it all from The Colour of Magic. You can start from several subthreads of the Discworld mythos. Moist von Lipwig, the Night Watch, and DEATH all have their own little series. Small Gods is fairly good "single" book of Discworld.
