Regarding the origins of Trolls in Tolkien's Middle Earth

I was recently doing a marathon run of the movies and I suddenly had a thought regarding something that neither the movies or the books address. That being the specifics of the origins of Trolls in Tolkien's Middle Earth.

Although Tolkien intended to change it, Orcs are the result of Elves that were tortured, mutilated and twisted by dark craft of Morgoth. This is because, despite his great power, Morgoth could not create life by his own accord and could only twist the creations of Eru. Likewise to Orcs, Trolls were created as Morgoth's twisted parody of Ents. However, Tolkien never explained exactly how Morgoth created the Trolls. Could it be that Trolls are derived from the missing Entwives?

I don't think Tolkien ever explicitly explained where trolls came from.

They might be a corrupted form of Ent, and the two races seem to be analogous.

While it might not be Tolkien's intent, there is an elemental aspect to both. The Ents are sort of plant elementals (like Alan Moore's Swamp Thing), while the trolls seem to be associated with stone, as they turn to stone in sunlight.

Yeah, I know he never explains it in the books (not even in the Unfinished Tales). And going with your mention of Trolls turning into stone, that makes me think of the petrification of trees.
